El Escorial visible from the Roman road

El Escorial visible from the Roman road
The Monastery Palace of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Phillip II's headquarters for running the largest empire yet seen.
Somehow, viewing it from the ruins of an earlier 'biggie', its impact is softened!

Thank you, Larry!
Up close it is awe- inspiring as no doubt was the intention!
This Roman road isn't even on most maps of the history of the area. It is very apparent from areal photography though! - it was a minor road, probably to and from the mining areas in the mountains around here.
You can see it on Google maps. I have pinpointed the spot.

Roman roads were usually straight as an arrow, I guess this one is too.

From the air, and you can make it out from an aerial map, it is straight but on the ground, it isn't quite so straight. The Romans weren't daft; they did go round the main obstacles!

I remember some of the roads in Northumberland which follow the course of Roman roads- there were places when they went into valleys and steeply up again where lorries or buses regularly got stuck;-)
