Fonthill Bishop Church

Fonthill Bishop Church
The Anglican church of All Saints was mentioned in 1242 and has evidence of work in the 14th and 15th centuries. Thorough restoration in 1871 and 1879 was directed by T.H. Wyatt, the Anglo-Irish architect. The interior of the church has a 12th-century stone font and two 17th-century box pews with doors. The building was designated as Grade I listed in 1966, when it was united with the parish of Berwick St Leonard.

I agree with the other comments...............the church is really beautiful and seems to be in amazing condition given it's age and history. The grounds are very well kept too.

I especially like the lichen-covered roof tiles and the lovely arched windows.

I like the images in the PiPs too. I'm guessing the house next to the church is the Vicarage?

In the second PiP, I'm intrigued by what seems to be a door high up under the eaves, which seems odd.

A smashing series Rosa!

It really is an old one Keith. We weren't sure where the entrance was and I almost ended up at the Old Vicarage, which was a beautiful house, nothing like vicars are given these days!

I think the building next to the church was either a school (most probably) or village hall, but is now a private residence. Come to think of it, I used to go to dances in the village and it wasn't there, so I guess it was a school. We were also wondering about that door, but I haven't found anything out about it yet.

Thank you so much for your kind and interesting comments Keith. Hope you've had the same sunshine as us today! Good evening.

It is listed as Anglican from the 16th century, but it would have been alined to the Roman Catholic Church before Henry VIII and the Reformation. Thank you for your kind comments and interest Jose Manuel. Have a good day.

A fine set of pictures of this lovely ancient church (with the mystery door) and its surroundings Rosa. I'm no expert but the large window in the building next to the church points to it being a school at one time. The window would have admitted additional light to the classroom. A holiday cottage I rented in Scotland, once a school, had a similar window in the kitchen, which was originally the classroom.

All the best, Doug

Thank you for your kind comments Doug. Yes, I think you are right about it being a school. Also, they so often were close to the church in these small villages.

Best regards,
Rosa.
