Sandsfoot Gardens & Castle

Sandsfoot Gardens & Castle
Sandsfoot Castle is an artillery fort constructed by Henry VIII. It formed part of the King's Device programme to protect against invasion and defended the Weymouth Bay anchorage. The stone castle was completed by 1542. Earthwork defences were built around the landward side of the castle, probably in 1623. Sandsfoot saw service during the English Civil War. The fortress was withdrawn from military use in 1665. By the early 18th century it was in ruins, its stonework taken for use in local building projects. The clay cliffs on which the castle had been built had always been unstable and subject to erosion. The castle's gun platform began to collapse into the sea and, by the 1950s, had been entirely destroyed. The ruins were closed to visitors on safety grounds, although civic gardens were planted alongside it in 1951. Repairs were undertaken between 2009 and 2012 enabling it to be reopened to the public.

Thank you George. There was a bridge to take you into the castle, but unfortunately it has been closed this year.

A good position for a fortification. I like the way the curve of the hedge leads the eye to the castle.

Thank you for your kind comments Doug. I was having problems with autofocus on my camera that day, so not as sharp as I would like. Still having problems unfortunately.
All the best, Rosa.

With regard to the autofocus problems. I imagine you have already do so, but it might be worth checking the connection between lens and camera for any contamination. Just a thought.

All the best, Doug

I will double check Doug, but I have tried two other lenses on the camera and still have the same problem. Thank you for your help though.

A well composed main image Rosa. The hedge makes a lovely job of drawing the eye directly to the ruined fort. Nice, but challenging light by the look of it and you did well to get such a lovely definition in the clouds.

The PiPs are both very nice...........with fantastic detail and textures in the stonework. I especially like the view out to sea in the first PiP.

Great work as always!

A lovely cliff top position, with the available tools at the time building it would have been a mammoth undertaking. I hope you have had a nice Sunday Rosalyn, the rain returned in the late afternoon. I went for the flue jab this morning no mention of the covid booster, has your daughter fully recovered ?

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
Yes indeed, it would have been. I had my booster yesterday and haven't felt well since. Hopefully better tomorrow. I haven't had the flu jab yet though. My daughter is fully recovered thank you.

Hi Rosa
A very nice picture, and great information
Wonderful to see this in the context of naval defence, especially all those boats which could be carrying all kinds of unwelcome invaders!
Great colours too
Best Wishes, a nice week ahead, and stay safe!!
