St John's Church ~ Glastonbury

St John's Church ~ Glastonbury
Normally there are many buskers in front of this church and often traffic along the road, so I was very pleased to get this uncluttered shot, with traffic barred and buskers elsewhere! Also showing the Celtic Cross memorial stone.

DSC 8372

The Victorian drinking fountain on Lambrook Street in the town. On a stone to the left is written 'Commit no nuisance' and above the arch it says 'To the Tor', above a pointing hand/finger.

Such beautiful church...............I like the colour of the stonework and it looks very imposing in the sunshine. I like the shape of the Celtic Cross, and the fine detail you've captured. The flowers and the wreath are lovely and colourful.

I like the old drinking fountain as well................and also the "commit no nuisance" sentiment. I wonder if it's still in use?

Two super images Rosa.........nicely done. Have a good week.

Thank you Keith. I was lucky with the weather. The church is right in the middle of the High Street. There are several drinking fountains around the town and they all have spring water that is supposed to have healing properties...well it is Glastonbury ;-)

A very impressive church, it looks well maintained, how tall is the cross ? compared with the fence it looks quite large, the fountain would be called a hydration point nowadays !! is there a horse trough close by

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
I don't know how tall the cross is Peter. It looks taller than it probably is from this perspective.
I was trying to be a bit arty ;-)) I didn't see a horse trough.

A lovely view of the church and of the Celtic cross. I like the drinking fountain and the advice to "commit no nuisance." That had a fairly specific meaning for the Victorians but I can't help feeling that all of us manage to be a nuisance from time to time. Still we can only do our best to behave well.

Thank you Jean. There are many drinking fountains around the town. I saw one other, but not sure where the rest are. It is spring water...I didn't try it :)

Haha, the cross you have in the foreground looked like a gigantic additional tower to me at first glance. A great church that I too have seen up-close, well captured here. Love the fountain archway too. Well done.

Cheers, Herb

Thank you Herb....I was trying to be artistic with this shot ;-))
I though the fountain was much older, but from what I have read, it is Victorian.

A lovely and quintessentially English church, Rosa. The Celtic knotwork on the cross looks quite Scottish. The Victorian drinking fountain is magnificent. I am sure you commit no nuisance, when you are in Lambrook Street. LOL. Cheers, Joe

Hi Rosa

A very nice picture, of the church, with a wonderful blue sky and red poppies!
Perhaps the buskers read the words "Commit no nuisance", and cleared off!
Maybe Sacre Coeur in Paris could learn a lesson here, and be rid of all the scam artists and other low life which congregates outside there!

Best Wishes, a nice weekend, and stay safe!!
Peter

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter_Private_Box club
Hi Peter,
There don't seem to be as many buskers as there often are, but maybe it was too hot for them, or not worth it with fewer visitors at the moment. That suits me fine :-))
All the best,
Rosa.

Terrific main shot Rosa, I like the way the tower of the church is balanced by the Celtic cross in this fine composition. The detail and strong contrast in the PiP enhance the nicely crafted stonework of the drinking fountain very well.
