Bruton Dovecote ~ Birds & Daisies

Bruton Dovecote ~ Birds & Daisies
The Bruton Dovecote is a limestone tower that was built between the 15th and 17th century. It seems likely that this square three storey structure was originally erected as a watch tower. From surviving relieving arches it appears that the building at one time had four two light windows on the middle floor and possibly a door opening on the south-west elevation.

There are only 200 pigeon holes.

An interesting ruin on this hill and the picture being made a little mysterious by the ravens too. "What! -I hear you cry - these are not ravens they are doves!" Well we can keep with our imagination Rosa -can't we :)

It's would have been perfect had they been doves Herb, but I had to be quick to get this shot as it was....me fighting my way up the windy hill ;-))
Cheers, Rosa.

I much prefer this version over the other shot of the tower..............the birds add some dynamism to the image and the huge bank of cloud behind it is very dramatic! Some nice leading lines too!

I really like the detail in the PiP showing the interior - I'm guessing there would have been wooden ladders of some sort at one time.

Also...........I now realise how those little square mailboxes in offices got the name pigeonholes!

If only they had been pigeons though Keith ;-)
Yes there were apparently ladders and at some point there were 3 floors and a fireplace!

Ha ha, yes that clicked with me too - Pigeonholes!!

Interesting Rosalyn, I see it has been described as a watch tower but I get a feeling there may have been more to it in it's early life. On a moonlit night perhaps a bit haunting.
Oh here we go me and my Imagination!!!!

It's good to have an imagination Maurice. A sight like this when there was a full moon, I can well imagine would look very haunting....maybe I should try it ;-)

Hi Rosa

Nice composition here. The birds really make it for me, be they doves, crows, or anything else!
The PiPs add great interest, showing that once there were windows there..
Perhaps Rapunzel lived here!!

I like it!

Best Wishes

Hi Peter,

I think my granddaughter would think the same about Rapunzel :) I am pleased you like the version with the birds. I took it as I was going up the hill, with lots of wind in my face, so was quite happy with the result!

Best wishes,
Rosa.

It certainly looks as though it was adapted for the doves for the size of the building there are not many nest holes

Not many pigeons in there at the moment Peter. I remember a few years ago when I was there, I saw lots of them in the holes.

A fine series of images of this interesting building Rosa. The tower looks most impressive standing on the skyline of the first image especially with the flock of birds. Like the detail of the interior that you have managed to capture.
