Thank you Frans. They had a lot of staff to keep everything shiny. They must have worked very hard. Can't do without a dishwasher Frans ;-)

Great kitchen series Rosa ~ I reckon it would have been hot work for the staff ~ I'm glad that we have modern appliances to enjoy these days :~)

My Grandmother started work in the kitchen of a large house, as a scullery maid... very hard work!
Great photo, Rosa, and the PiP's too.

Thank you very much John. That's what so many had to do in those days. I am so glad times have changed!!

Another excellent series here Rosa. Always fascinating to see where 'ordinary' people worked in bygone days. Imagine being to poor sod that had to wash-up the dishes!

All the best for the coming week

Thank you very much Doug. It is so fascinating and they did work so hard for very little money. I didn't have a dish washer for years - didn't want one, but I wouldn't be without it now!!
Have a good new week ~ Rosa.

Not a microwave in sight !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wonder how good the meals were from these kitchens, controlling the temperature and cooking times would have been difficult, then in some of the houses the dinning room was miles away, i don't remember seeing a drip tray like that anywhere.
Some of these houses were completely self contained, have you ever been to Calke Abbey

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
I bet the meals were fabulous Peter. They were such good cooks and got little reward for their hard work, in the heat of the kitchen. No I haven't been to Calke Abbey. I don't know Derbyshire very well at all. It's on the list ;-))

Terrific images Rosa, my mother went in service at the age of 14 and always said the long hours really wore them down.

Thank you Roger. 14 is so young! Thank goodness times have changed and 'ordinary' people have so many opportunities.

Thank you Pam. The jelly moulds are beautiful. I would think there is quite an art in getting the jellies out! Must bring back good memories for you.

Beautiful series! I admire how British houses (and museums) are presented, you can really experience how it used to be then. In Germany it often tends to be rather dry and boring;-)
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Gudrun club
Thank you for all your wonderful kind comments Gudrun. Although this house is still privately owned, they have done a good job of enticing the public in with plenty to see and do and as they live in the house it has a lovely atmosphere. I think the National Trust do a very good job in making their properties very inviting to visit and always improving I think. Do you have the equivalent to the Trust in Germany?
Gudrun club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne club
Sadly we don't have an equivalent to the NT, houses and museums are either state run or privately owned.
What we do have is organisations like Alpemverein, Schwarzwaldverein etc. who keep up and mark walking paths and who also run huts on the paths.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Gudrun club
The huts along the paths is a very good idea!

Hi Rosa,

What a great collection of shots!
We can just imagine a pig slowly roasting in front of the fire...
And the poor kitchen maid who has to clean all those copper pots!
I like it!

Best Wishes

Hi Peter,

You can just imagine the heat on a summers day. Thank goodness those days are long gone but so good to look back on them and admire their work. All the washing up must have been horrendous!!

best wishes, Rosa.
