I had not really visited Tyneside before only passing through Newcastle on trains and coaches heading to Scotland. At the end of May 2018 I decided to have a couple of nights in the city and explore the area and see the buses. A refurbishment project began in 2013 but the tunnels were still closed in June 2018 following a number of setbacks. A refurbishment project began in 2013 but the tunnels were still closed in June 2018 following a number of setbacks. During the period of the closure a free shuttle bus service has been provided under a contract arranged by Nexus, the transport authority in the Tyneside area with cycles carried on an open trailer. Saturday 2 June 2018 (1024) – The former Northern General bus station in Worswick Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne stands in a sorry state nowadays. It opened in 1929 and closed in April 1996. Since then it has served as a car park. This view is taken from the Pilgrim Street end and shows the bus company offices on which can be seen the ghostly outline of the word ‘NORTHERN’ in National Bus Company style upper case lettering. Saturday 2 June 2018 (1024) – The former Northern General bus station in Worswick Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne stands in a sorry state nowadays. It opened in 1929 and closed in April 1996. Since then it has served as a car park. This view is taken from the Pilgrim Street end. Buses entered the bus station through the doorway visible beyond the green car in bay 3 then parked in their appropriate bay. On departure they then performed a hill start. The building with the lighter coloured frontage was the bus company offices on which can be seen the ghostly outline of the word ‘NORTHERN’ in National Bus Company style upper case lettering.
