DSCF2558 Green Mountain Travel NK15 OJH at Howden - 1 Jun 2018
Friday 1 June 2018 (1422) – The pedestrian and cycle tunnels under the River Tyne that link Jarrow (on the south bank) and Howden (on the north bank) were opened in 1951. A refurbishment project began in 2013 but the tunnels were still closed in June 2018 following a number of setbacks. During the period of the closure a free shuttle bus service has been provided under a contract arranged by Nexus, the transport authority in the Tyneside area with cycles carried on an open trailer.

Green Mountain Travel of Cramlington NK15 OJH, a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter BlueTec with the cycle trailer, is seen at the northern end of the tunnels. The sole cyclist on this trip is seen loading his cycle on the trailer.
