DSCF2554 Green Mountain Travel NK15 OJH at Jarrow - 1 Jun 2018
Friday 1 June 2018 (1407) – The pedestrian and cycle tunnels under the River Tyne that link Jarrow (on the south bank) and Howden (on the north bank) were opened in 1951. A refurbishment project began in 2013 but the tunnels were still closed in June 2018 following a number of setbacks. During the period of the closure a free shuttle bus service has been provided under a contract arranged by Nexus, the transport authority in the Tyneside area with cycles carried on an open trailer.

Green Mountain Travel of Cramlington NK15 OJH, a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter BlueTec, had just arrived at the southern end of the tunnels and unloading of the cycles was taking place. The entrance building to the tunnels stands near the white van in the background.
