Church of St Laurence, Priddy (PiPs)

Church of St Laurence, Priddy (PiPs)
Church of St Laurence, Priddy on the Mendip Hills.

Originally built in the 13th Century the church was partially rebuilt in the 15th Century and restored between 1881-1888. The churchyard is said to predate the church.

The stained glass window was donated in memory of Catherine Gibbons of Eastwater Farm who died aged 19 in 1988. The window shows her beloved horse. (Please see PiP)

Priddy itself is steeped in history. Priddy sheep fair has been held on the green from at least as early as 1348.

There are also four earthwork enclosures called the Priddy Circles. These are thought to have been the site of henge monuments. There is also evidence of a number of possible Bronze Age barrows said to be associated with the circles.

I have added 'In A Country Churchyard' by Chris de Burgh as the link

What a nice picture of this place, and I really love the stained glass window. The information you provided is wonderful and I am fascinated by the richness of this place and the surrounds for history! Fantastic!

Thank you very much Janet. Really appreciated. I was quite surprised to learn the stained glass window was relatively modern. The green has a little wooden building that houses wooden hurdles and it is said that as long as the hurdles are on the green the villagers retain the right to hold events there. Sadly the hurdles are replicas as the originals were destroyed by fire some years ago.

Oh! Thank you for the reply! Very interesting about the hurdles...there is nothing like that here in the western US and I always thought these hunting grounds and so forth were only an England thing. However, I believe there are a couple of areas in the East, "New England" where the properties were set up so there could be fox and hare-hunts with fence jumping and the like. Fascinating. Thanks for the info and your lovely reply!

Hi Janet. The hunts still go out here although they are not allowed to hunt foxes and deer etc any more. My husband tells me that the 'hurdles' are actually pen sections to hold the sheep for the sheep fair etc although sadly they are replicas as the originals were destroyed by fire. It is a fascinating place There were ore mines here years ago and I read there are still unfenced areas where you have to watch your step and also watch out for adders! Have a good week.

It is a lovely old church, simple and elegant. The window is very interesting; a good example of high quality modern glasswork. It all looks serene and eternal, which is a calm moment in the midst of Aus heat and catastrophes just now, Carol.thanks for sharing, and enjoy your week.

A very old church indeed ... and not a lot of graves around anymore. Wonder if we still can read something on those graves ...
Have a lovely new week ahead, dear Carol.

Nice framing and illumination of this wonderful old church Carol. I like the long shadows falling on the church and the PiP showing the stained glass window.

Thank you very much Cesare. Really appreciated. I liked the stained glass window very much, and although more modern it did not look at all out of place in this lovely old church Have a good weekend
