While photographing a flowering rape field, I discovered a large flock of tiny "flies", about 1-2 mm in size, flying purposefully towards the upper part of the inflorescence of a rape plant. When inspecting the photos, it was clear that they were not flies, but hatchling wasps (wasp waist! Also partly visible in the photo; ovipositor). On further investigation, I found out that it is very likely Tersilochus heterocerus, a parasitic wasp that lays its eggs into the caterpillars of the rapeseed pest Rape Pollen Beetle (Brassicogethes aeneus). Tersilochus caterpillars that hatch feed in the caterpillar and finally kill it. Tersilochus heterocerus limits the number of pollen beetles and is therefore suitable for biological control of this pest. More details can be found in the mentioned internet articles.
I could not clarify why the parasitic wasps appeared in such large numbers and in such a targeted manner. My assumption is that maybe a "mass marriage" of males and females took place here, because something similar is also known from bees.
