Der Kleine Perlmutterfalter - Queen of Spain frittilary - Issoria lathonia - PiP

The Queen of Spain fritillary (Issoria lathonia) is a butterfly that is counted among the Fritillaries because it has pearly whitish spots on the underside of the hind wings. The caterpillars mainly eat field pansies and overwinter. "The caterpillar lives mainly on fields or their edges and is thus endangered by more intensive cultivation. The threats consist, for example, of ploughing up (the soil) directly after harvesting and the associated destruction of field pansies, application of sprays and land consolidation measures that destroy field margins such as embankments, field margins and paths. In particular, the application of total herbicides (e.g. glyphosate), which has increased extremely since the turn of the millennium, harms the species. In Germany, this butterfly species is not yet considered endangered in most federal states.
The photo was taken on a fallow field in Franconia.
One further hint: In order to be able to identify fritillaries with certainty, you need not only a photo of the upper side, but above all of the underside!!!
