Grey herons have established a breeding colony in Stuttgart's zoological-botanical garden "Wilhelma" and aren't shy at all. Walking below the trees with nests is strictly at your own risk;-)

It seems that the Stuttgart gardens are a haven for lots of wildlife that are free to come and go as they please. This is so nice to read about. I think I'd open my umbrella while walking under the trees. ;-)

Thanks a lot, Amelia! More and more wildlife is thriving in towns where there's less pesticide use than in rual areas. Stuttgart houses the largest colony of field hares in Baden-Württemberg and the foxes are notorious for activating burglar alarms;-)
Lol, umbrella isn't a bad idea;-) I just avoid that path now as the ground is dotted white.

Ich glaube, ähnliche Exemplare habe ich auch in Florida gesehen.
Bei uns sieht man sie jetzt dann wohl bald wieder auf den Feldern herumstaksen.

Herzlichen Dank, Volker! In die Wilhelma nehme ich grundsätzlich das Tele mit, sonst habe ich es eher selten dabei.... Ih habe mich auch schon geärgert, wenn ich mit dem Immerdrauf unterwegs war und manche Fotos nicht machen konnte.
Dann bin ich mal gespannt, was du in HH vor das Tele bekommst!

There are some around London zoo too. The fish for the penguins are easy pickings for the herons! (And they are used to people too..)

Thank you so much, Peter! They adapt well to living in built up areas, as long there's water nearby. I'm sure the keepers add some extra fish so there's plenty both for penguins and herons.
In Stuttgart the herons turn up everywhere at feeding time- as long there's fish involved;-)
