Dancing round the Union Jack

Gentoos at Port Lockroy with Mount William on Anvers Island in the background.
The behaviour and breeding success of the gentoos on Port Lockroy has been studied over many years now. The presence of humans doesn't seem to have a negative effect on them, on the contrary, skuas are less likely to attack the chicks or steal eggs.

Daaanke, Udo! Hihi, man bemerke, dass die sich immer auf die Steine stellen, um etwas zu hinterlassen, dann machen sie sich selber nicht ganz so dreckig,-) Das rote Zeug ist angedauter Krill, weil die Kinderchen beim Essen immer kleckern,-)

Thank you, Graham! Basically the colours of the Mt William shot are the antarctic colours you see in good weather. Only where there are penguins other colours come in, the guano feeding red and green snow algae.
