Log log duplex vector (Explored)

Log log duplex vector (Explored)
The slide rule was developed in the 17th century, but its modern version dates from the mid-1800's. It was eventually displaced by the pocket calculator starting in the late 1960's. However, it was still used on Apollo missions in the 1970's.

Using the various scales on both sides, one could solve problems involving multiplication, division, square and cube roots, plane and hyperbolic trigonometry, logarithms, and numbers raised to a power.

This particular slide rule, the Keuffel & Esser log log duplex vector, came with a 132 page manual (http://www.mccoys-kecatalogs.com/KEManuals/4081-3_1955/4081-3_1955.pdf) and a 49 page supplemental manual www.mccoys-kecatalogs.com/KEManuals/4083-3/4083manual.pdf. If you think that camera manuals are difficult to read, try a slide rule manual.

Seeing this takes me back a piece. I do still have the one I used during my studies in a beautiful Leather case.
I agree about the User instructions.

Great shot - I remember so clearly, sitting in my Maths class at school, feeling the sense of elation when I finally worked out how to use my slide ruler!

I wonder how many of the Tech kids that we now teach, would find this easy to use?

172 page manual... sheesh not this chick! I can't even pronounce the name of the ruler, let alone use it! that's pretty insane! And Esther sine this is all about photography, you did a smashing job! And you exceeded the amount of numbers required this week.

Great shot with lots of numbers. I remember using a slide rule many years ago, but have forgotten how it works.

beautifully taken photo, and great idea for numbers. I used to use a slide rule and still have my prized, and if I recall correctly, very expensive duplex log-log, somewhere, along with my copy of "Teach Yourself the Slide Rule" by the amazingly and unforgettably named "Burns Snodgrass"

Great close-up shot of a very interesting piece of equipment, but I'd have no idea how to use it whatsoever! :(

It reminds me of class benches and during math ..!
In his time the class teacher was such a rule,
but larger and frightened us with pretending to hit us.

What a great shot for the challenge .... like the angle of the slide rule and the colors all work well together. Sure glad I didn't have to try to learn to use one of these ... :)

Very, nice clear photo Esther. Like anything, it makes sense when you know how to use it. I've never seen one before, but still have my little calculator from the 1960s. Thanks for the info. :)

Lol. A headache from school...the old log tables too (my most hated book). When we were allowed to use calculators, it was like JC had risen again. A cool blast from the past so well presented.
