Wild is a good word, Jens and it's use here is a good description of the sea today and gratifyingly the same in both languages thanks to our common linguistic ancestor!

Eigentlich dürfte ich überhaupt kein Problem damit haben, Englisch zu sprechen, denn das Plattdeutsch, welches man früher in Mecklenburg sprach ähnelt dem englischen noch mehr. Ich habe in der DDR auch bis zum Studium Englisch als Fremdsprache gehabt. Das war ein Privileg das nur rund einem Drittel der Ostdeutschen in der Schule zuteil wurde. Die anderen hatten Russisch als einzige Fremdsprache. Allerdings war ich bis 1989 davon überzeugt, niemals in Länder reisen zu dürfen in denen man Englisch spricht. Deswegen und weil ich sprachlich eher unbegabt bin, ist mein Englisch sehr dürftig. Allerdings habe ich mir jetzt ein App gekauft, mit der ich meine englischen Sprachkenntnisse wieder auffrischen werde. Denn nun bin ich in einem Alter in dem ich weniger arbeiten und mit meiner Lebensgefährtin mehr reisen möchte. Meine Kinder sind inzwischen erwachsen und stehen nicht mehr ständig als Dolmetscher zur Verfügung. Mal schauen ob ich demnächst sprachliche Fortschritte mache. ;-)

I too am not a natural linguist; other languages come hard to me. I only speak French (after a fashion) because I spent most school summer holidays there. I haven't spoken it for 40 years and yet it is still a lot better than my Spanish, even though I've lived in Spain for the past 13 years!

Als Engländer ist man auch nicht so sehr angewiesen auf eine Fremdsprache. Aber die jungen Menschen, die raus wollen und können, sind heute automatisch Mehrsprachig. Für mich ist es aber immer noch schwer zu begreifen, dass mein Sohn in Schweden in englischer Sprache sein Masterstudium macht. Die Welt könnte so schön sein ohne machthungrige verrückte Diktatoren.

I don't keep up to date so much now with the news and current affairs but I hope that Zelensky got all the 'Man of the Year' awards going!

How did you not get wet?!

I got wet! But I knew to turn around at the right time, unlike a new arrival with all the latest camera gear. He just had time to explain that he'd driven for four hours to get here after hearing the weather forecast and had always wanted to film a stormy day here when the biggest wave of the day completely knocked him off his feet and drenched all his gear. As this is a decent family site, I won't repeat him verbatim but suffice to say he was a little bit less than gruntled!

Oh no! Well, even if they didn't get a photo, they will remember the day in great detail!!

Glad you understand waves better than that. It's like staying out of the way of a kid on a swing.

A lifetime's practice, Laura, but even so, mistakes can happen so I really do make my kind of risk assessment before I do anything like this, climb a mountain or whatever. Seems to have worked so far, touch wood! (I think you say 'knock on wood', stateside!)

Yes, we do say "knock on wood". Seems an odd variation from "touch wood" - getting more dramatic over time? What's next, "get a splinter"? *smile*

Thank you Andy! Yes I have stood there watching the waves crash in many times, and on one occasion watched some young lads diving in....they were loving it, but they scared me! Thanks also for the notes in PiP, as I didn't know about the monkey hut. I would love to be there again!

Thank you, Eunice! I only had to travel about 10 miles. It was the fellow standing next to me with all the expensiv gear who had travelled for 4 hours to get here, only to be inundated within seconds of setting up!
