Very many thanks to you all!
Andy Rodker club has replied to JeanBy the time farming was all the rage and they were building this tomb, say about 4,500 years ago, the coastline and weather would have been much more like today's but I reckon the coastline here could have been hundreds of yards further out to sea and I bet that the Longships Lighthouse island, just visible on the horizon here in the white haze, would still have been joined to the mainland 1 mile away.
All guesswork, so don't take my word for it!
Jean has replied to Andy Rodker clubLeon_Vienna club has replied to Andy Rodker clubRising and sinking sea levels and (sea) erosion, you mentioned already, Andy, - wind, rain, frost can do quite "well", too, not only along the coastline, but also more inland.
Andy Rodker club has replied to Leon_Vienna clubYou are right about the forest cover - Cornwall was well-forested (lInden or lime trees being ascendant soon after the climate settled into the modern pattern, +/- 7-8,000 years ago), but fairly quickly stripped bare by man with the advent of farming (5-6,000 years ago here, I would guess).
