How long people have been enjoying that wonderful view.

Andy Rodker club has replied to Jean
Well, This view only existed since the end of the last Ice Age when sea levels rose, and about the same time as modern man started hunting here as the ice retreated so I'd say about 9-10,000 years ago, but they would have possibly have been reindeer hunters, not settled in one place and the coast line is unlikely to have looked anything like this and it certainly would have been further out to sea and would have encompassed the Scilly Isles until they became separated maybe 7-8,000 years ago.
By the time farming was all the rage and they were building this tomb, say about 4,500 years ago, the coastline and weather would have been much more like today's but I reckon the coastline here could have been hundreds of yards further out to sea and I bet that the Longships Lighthouse island, just visible on the horizon here in the white haze, would still have been joined to the mainland 1 mile away.
All guesswork, so don't take my word for it!

The interesting subject in all that thoughs is, that nature is a very dynamic thing - and it becomes even more dynamic as mankind began to intervene. I even can imagine, that for centuries this view wasn't possible at all, because of trees and woods.
Rising and sinking sea levels and (sea) erosion, you mentioned already, Andy, - wind, rain, frost can do quite "well", too, not only along the coastline, but also more inland.

Leon, I'm the same as you and Jean, these views lead to conjecture about how the land looked at various points in the past. That's the history and geography (my favourite school subjects) in me; the combination of the two subjects provides me with a powerful stimulus to the imagination when in places such as this (and, indeed, almost anywhere as long as I have the time to indulge my fancies in this way - perhaps why I only think about these things these days, on holiday!).
You are right about the forest cover - Cornwall was well-forested (lInden or lime trees being ascendant soon after the climate settled into the modern pattern, +/- 7-8,000 years ago), but fairly quickly stripped bare by man with the advent of farming (5-6,000 years ago here, I would guess).

An impressive view Andy.................and I'm guessing that it would be only fairly important people who would be buried here?

(Actually I mean fairly important DEAD people)!
Andy Rodker club has replied to Keith Burton club
Who knows, Keith! The 19th century archaeologist messed it about something rotten and it is impossible now to compare with other maybe similar tombs, if that is indeed what it is!
On your second point, again who knows but I would hope your assumption is a correct one!
