Herbs garden birds: Green finch on drinking fountain.

Herbs garden birds: Green finch on drinking fountain.
Another look at one of our garden bird visitors. This time taking a drink from the newly waterproofed dry fountain bowl in our garden. This one I am quite sure is an adult male. Scientific name: Chloris chloris. ~ The fountain - a relic from our last house which had a fish pond with this working wedding present fountain, the centre of attraction. We had Koi and such-like as well as a visiting heron :)

Enjoy full screen.

A great capture, in itself justifying the waterproofing of the fountain bowl.

A cracking capture Herb..............with spot on focus and fantastic feather detail. Your fountain bowl makes a perfect perch!

I love green finches................but I always think they look a bit grumpy :-))

You are right about them having what I think is a rather fierce look to them normally but I was lucky with this. They always look good though. In the warmer dry weather I had the rare opportunity to leave my tripod mounted camera set up and pre-focused hence the jump in quality.

So he is Daniela It was a most fortunate turn of the head from it towards me. I took a few with my wired remote trigger and so I think it heard the shutter of the first couple of frames before this.

One bird I have never had the luck to see in the garden, in one week a couple of years back I had 17 species of bird visit the feeders a Green finch was not among them.
Lovely clean and clear shot Herb, well taken.

Herb Riddle club has replied to HappySnapper
Thanks Maurice. 17 species is more than a lot of people see in their lives. So happy that you enjoyed my green finch here. They have been visiting the feeding station for some years now and so its nice that they like the bird bath too.

A great image Herb, I've not seen a Greenfinch for a few years, although I do get Goldfinches I think they have a nest somewhere close

Herb Riddle club has replied to Peter Castell club
Cheers Peter and apologies for late reply. We never ever saw a goldfinch until a year or so back. they came with the bull finches. Like yours, i am sure they must nest somewhere close. We have loads of trees and dense bushes around our house and so they could be anywhere,

A lovely shot, Herb. Stay safe!

It was indeed Andy. The first time we saw it, it was a icy Christmas morning and it had one of our big Orfe fish in its beak. Afterwards we kept the pond netted for long periods. I don;t think we ever lost a Koi though. (we had about 4)

Visiting Herons and Koi usually end up with fewer fish :)) I used to build hides in my ponds under which the Koi could be safe
4 years ago.
Herb Riddle club has replied to Nick Weall club
Thanks Nick. yes we too had a nice big shelter for the fish. The fountain was stood on a double building stone, those long ones completely hollowed out. This acted like two caves for the fish-completely safe from above. The heron got at least one of our best Orfe though.

Herb this shot alone makes any work seem totally insignificant and highly worth while. Nice to see a Green finch for me many years as not a bird from oz.. my father always had a male that sang its heart out.

You should have a great time with the birds from now on as the water gets known.
Herb Riddle club has replied to Steve Paxton club
Thanks Steve. don't know why I missed so many comments here. Yes, some great bird portraits with this but it has now almost come to an end as the rains have returned. There are many gutters and the like proving drinking places and so I have hardly seen a bird on here for a week or so now. They do sing nice.

Excellent capture Herb, don't see many Green Finches around here these days. We used to get quite large numbers raiding the peanuts back in the 70s/80s, but that all changed with the overbuilding on local farmland and a new dual carriageway interrupting the field-scape.

Herb Riddle club has replied to Roger Dodger club
Thanks Roger, I can well understand those bird habits changing when big things happen nearby. We are even today, having a steady stream of them on our sunflower seed hearts.
