Wonderful picture, sad it finished this way to me doubly nostalgic for I worked there, near Limassol, during 1975.

Thanks Pat. Indeed you are right. This one was carrying 'plasterboard' and so was not too bad. It was quite quickly made safe and emptied of any polluting fuels. See link in description.

Good to see you Peter. A question, no doubt that many people have asked. It is now well established as a tourist site and maybe a place for the fish to play too. The ship struck these rocks in 2011 carrying hardboard. A short time later it was salvaged of fuel and anything of both value and polluting as well as being made safe and secure here. See the new link in my description above.

I went at Paphos on Cyprus. I remember the amphitheater there and the famous mosaics, but I can't remember the wreck.

Hi Polytropos. This is in fact a good 15km away north of Paphos at Seacaves, Peyia just north of Coral Bay. You would need a car or take the bus to get there. The mosaics and amphitheater are in the archaeological site almost in the tourist center of Paphos. There is in fact another wreck much closer to Paphos, again going north. It is out on a sandbank some way from the shore and can be seen from the coastal walk just north of the fortress. Nb It has only been here since 2011! Mapped now too.

Thanks Percy. This coastline can be dangerous for sure. There are sandbanks and many rocky outcrops with many very rocky bays like this. Storms can also rage here bring large waves and strong winds as we have personally witnessed a few times. I imagine most ships stay well clear!

Very interesting. I was in '98 in Cyprus, so I could not see it. I neither remember the other,
the Demetrios ll. A pity .

Nice to see you again Daniela. Yes, this was only here since 2011. The Demetrios II since 1998 and so it might have happened when you were there or just days later. In fact you would be shocked now of how built-up the whole coast has become, in my opinion, loosing much of its charm. Even at SeaCaves it is no longer possible to walk the whole length directly by the waters edge because of new developments right up to and beyond the coastal paths. A great pity!

This is the same in every place, Herb. Between '95 and '96 I have been 6 months in Tenerife and and it was already built-up. But if I look now at the map it's terrible what they have made in a bit more than 20 years.

A cracking photo Herb.............and a fascinating link. I love the way you've composed this - the fence and it's shadow make great leading lines. Beautiful blue tones in the sea and sky as well.

You have to laugh though........If they didn't want people to walk on the fence, why did they build one with a wide, flat top?

I'm wondering why the wreck is still there..........given it was made watertight in 2013.........I would have thought it would have been towed away and sold for scrap by now! Maybe they just leave it there as a warning to mariners?

Once again I express my thanks to you Keith. You know already that I try to compose my photos ok here. Dead right about the style of fence too for walking. Anybodies guess as to why this and also the Demetrios II, down the coast are still here. Can't be worth the salvaging companies efforts as money is everything, as you know. Now a tourist attraction for sure though as it still looks good when the sun is on it. Just too far from the rocky shore itself to encourage anybody to try and climb onto it. Ropes and hoist would be needed. I have a few shots of the on-board fences though as possible HFF candidates in the future :)

I really like this composition, the line of the fence leading to the ship.
It amazes me that they build a fence with such a wide top, then ask people not to walk on it!
The simple answer is put a pointed top on it!!

Hi Peter. Good that my compositions still please you. There is just no real answer to fence style. Maybe they could only get this flat shaped wood but did not really want to build it this way. In Britain we may have laced the top with: never drying tar, barbed wire or glass, as you know. Better the Cyprus way then.

We used to see a ship out to sea.. back in 2008 and think it was waiting to enter some port.. it turned out to be the floating wreck of.. MV Demetrios II.. obviously a different vessel to your picture here... Cheers from Dave.

Great to see you Dave. Yes the Demtrios II has been there sine 1998 so already ten years when you saw her. This one, far more recent at 2011. We saw the Demtrios too whilst promenading just north of Paphos this time. All in all, great eye candy!
