Milky Way bow from Cyprus

Milky Way bow from Cyprus
Taken from just north of Pafos at Sea Caves, looking south. This is a nine shot panorama, all done in portrait mode. Each capture taken via my Tokina zoom at 11mm, 15secs, F3.2, 1600iso. The edges are the coastal rocks of chalky limestone hence the light nature with the low foreground being the sea itself. The lighter low spot is in fact an island, Centre left shows us the constellation of Orion with its bright belt and sword. The bright star to the left of this is Sirius. The light milky bow of the Milky Way, consist of course, of millions of stars. All in all , a far better experience taking this in the mild black evenings of a new moon Cyprus than my Northern England.

Again my gratitude to Steve Paxton for his invaluable help in me capturing and creating this.

, Engelbert, Kawasirius, diedje and 20 other people have particularly liked this photo

Thanks a lot George, not quite up to yours and Steve's standards but I am slowly getting there.

Herb from a person who took photos of trees and now has thought to try a difficult discipline top marks for this shot. you have got the technique perfectly from the right info. It is still the dedication to get out in the dark and the cold to put it all to the test. there is nothing like giving some thing a go when it seems out of your reach. Top marks 11/10.

Always good to have you overlook my astronomical photos Steve. This spot was a little steep valley dropping down to the rocky cove below. I did try to spy out two high spots to create a bridge-like effect. It also provided some protection from the nearby lights of encroaching holiday villas. One day I intend to catch you up on all this. Anyway, I am most happy that it turned out well here and as said elsewhere, I am always indebted to your hep in all these matters.
Thanks a lot for the remarkable score too, Herb

That's great, I too remember the night sky of Cyprus. It was August '98, I was almost young at the time.

Hi Danni, I was here when it was a New Moon (no moon at all) so the sky was really black at times. So beautiful to see the stars so bright that they all twinkled. Aye, looking back through my many photos and videos of places that I have been, I know your feeling of being younger once!

Thanks a lot Toz. I always wonder if all the trouble in creating these shots is worthwhile but your comments make it so. Got to smile on your reference to our pal Steve who once again had to give me some help in this being edited. A million light-years before I catch up to him I fear but at least I have a goal. Glad you looked full screen and cheers for that great yellow star.

Excellent work Herb well done, something I would like to have a go at but not environmentally possible where I am.

Cheers Maurice. I know the feeling of frustration on trying such things in our heavily polluted skies but travel and patience has paid of here. I have always been fascinated by our heavens.

Congrats, this is excellent work, especially viewed large! I imaganie stitching isn't easy with only the stars to go by.

Thanks Gudrun. You are right about the stitching. Where there is a strong foreground, is ok but the centre of the picture with just stars is always a problem for me. There are lots of other problems too, to do with level-movement distortions and bringing out the soft milky way cloud like structure too. Glad you like it though.
