Cromwell Point Lighthouse

Cromwell Point Lighthouse
The site of the Cromwell Point Lighthouse was originally home to a Cromwell Feetwood Fort believed to have been built in the 16th century which was one of two built on Valentia Island around this time. The outline of the Cromwell Point fort with its bastions and barrack inside its wall can still be easily traced from the air, lying just inside the lighthouse enclosure wall. The fort was maintained after the Restoration and there are various State Paper entries about its repair over the period 1663-1665. It was disestablished in 1669. The first light for Cromwell Point was originally applied for on 30 March 1828 by the Right Honorary Maurice Fitzgerald, Knight of Kerry. Work commenced on the lighthouse ten years later in 1838, the light was first exhibited on 1 February 1841. Since November 1947 the light has been automated. www.valentiaisland.ie/explore-valentia/cromwell-point-lighthouse

A wonderfully sharp and clean shot of this beautiful little lighthouse Herb. The hills make a superb backdrop!

Thanks Keith -one of the few people able to comment on this one. I did wonder about having this as the main shot but went for the landscape instead. I do in fact have another view of this lighthouse -one with fences and so might use that some day for another HFF entry :) Anyway, great that you liked this. You could explore inside too -at a price but we did not have the inclination nor the time to do that.
Cheers, Herb

Hi Herb

Very interesting picture and beautiful photograph. I have vague memories of seeing it, but a trawl through my photos didn't find it. Perhaps it was a miserable day when I was there..

Best Wishes, and a good weekend.

Thanks Peter. I have now made this one; public. I can imagine the weather being far more miserable than we had it. Like you, I often fly pass great scenes and object because of heavy rain or rubbish lighting.
Best Wishes to you too and enjoy your weekend too. Herb
