Wooden Roses

Wooden Roses
Yesterday my very large European Larch tree ( Larix decidua) was well and truly pruned! This is a picture of the small brown cones, that I think look like tiny roses.

Günter Klaus, ©UdoSm, Diane Putnam, Gudrun and 29 other people have particularly liked this photo

They do look like tiny gold roses, Rosa, and the new shoots when they first appear resemble tiny green shaving brushes.

A good description of when they first appear Amelia! The tree is at least 45 years old and needs cutting back every few years.

A beautiful still-life study, Rosa. I love the warm, golden light. Your great use of light and shadow emphasizes the three-dimensionality of the wooden roses. When I saw the thumbnail of this photograph, I thought you had been gathering pine cones. Cheers, Joe

Thank you very much Joe. There are hundreds of cones still to be picked up across the garden! I should be out there doing it now! Cheers, Rosa.

Nicely captured Rosalyn you can save them for part of your Christmas decorations, enjoy your wide open space !!!

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
Thank you Peter. I have picked a lot of them up and put them in a nice bowl. My neighbour is in the process of cutting a tree down. It's a single Leylandii tree that is enourmous! He's doing as much as he can before the tree surgeons come and finish it off!

His problem will be the large area of dead soil is he going to have the stump ground out
3 years ago.
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
I doubt it Peter. It's a very big garden and the tree is right at the bottom where it adjoins a field. It will make that corner of my garden much lighter.

I think they look more like chocolate than wood. Of course that could be because we've run out of chocolate at home.............

A lovely still-life image Rosa.........the golden light and the detail. A nice background too.

Do you have a log fire? These would burn beautifully and smell lovely.......or maybe save them for a BBQ in the summer?
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
Never run out of chocolate Keith, haha! I was beginning to think they may look more like cabbages ;-)) Thank you for your very kind comments.

I hadn't thought of burning them. It's an enclosed log burner, but I can imagine they would smell good on an open fire. The BBQ sounds ideal. Let's hope we get a good summer :-))

Thank you Jean. It is a huge tree but I wouldn't be without it. It just needs regular trimming.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to José Manuel Polo club
I have gathered a lot of the pretty cones and they look good in a bowl. The tree will never be cut down while I am around Jose Manuel, but it does need cutting back regularly. I still have a swing hanging from it that my granddaughter still uses...and sometimes, so do I :-)
Happy Wednesday.

Pretty cones! My grandmother would have gathered enough of them to glue all over some object or another. A lampshade...an old cabinet...styrofoam balls for Christmas ornaments. I still miss her funny little projects!
