Cucklington ~ St Lawrence's Church

Cucklington ~ St Lawrence's Church
Perched on the east side of the Blackmore Vale, St Lawrence's Church stands on the main street to the north of Cucklington village centre. The earliest records of the church appear in 1291 with the first Rector recorded in 1317. Built from the local Blue Lias and Cary stone.

Love the gatehouse, if that is what it is Rosa. The church nestles nicely into the hill ~ Enjoy your weekend ~~~ Nick

Not sure if it's a gatehouse, but they have fab views from the other side. Many thanks for your kind comments. Have a good weekend ~ Rosa.

A nice sturdy looking Parish Church the stone has weathered well over the passing years, there must be others but I have never seen a Lantern on a church tower, stately houses often incorporated one, could you send some sun ? it's thick fog here, I hope you have a good day Rosalyn

Apparently the 'lantern' is called a Cupola and was constructed in 1705. Thanks for mentioning it. I had to look it up. If I was able to send the sun your way, I would Peter....it's still shining here.
Take care and have a good day.

Lovey architecture, Rosa. The gravestones add the ideal foreground interest. I love the upwards view of the church. You chose the angle well. Cheers, Joe

Thank you very much for your kind comments Joe. It was looking up that caused me to fall over. My foot went down a hole! Good job it's consecrated ground :) I was more worried about my camera than my ankle. LOL. Cheers, Rosa.

A lovely pair of village shots Rosa. I love the way the church is positioned on the slope of the hill. Your well chosen Pov has resulted in an great composition. I like the composition of the second shot with the line of receding white posts leading the eye towards the door of the church, nicely done.

Thank you very much Doug. The second picture shows the different colour stone better, with the blue lias looking quite different to the golden Cary stone.

Best wishes & good weekend,
Rosa.

Two nicely composed images Rosa. The church is really lovely and it look very impressive on the hillside. The stonework is beautiful and you've captured it in super detail. The graves provide some good foreground interest.

The view in the PiP is really nice..........and gives us a good look at the blue-faced block and the top of the tower. The archway is very impressive. I like the large white house too.

Good to see you making the most of the sunshine!

It's nice and sunny here today and we drove to Hayling Island - it was absolutely packed, with hundreds of cars and people everywhere. We decided not to risk it and drove home again :-(

Thank you for your kind comments Keith. It has a lovely view from the graveyard, and there is a public footpath beyond it, but far too muddy!

That is very disheartening to hear of all the people at Hayling Island. I would have done the same as you. I haven't been further than 4 miles. Take care and keep safe.

Hopefully the church will stand for many more years to come Jose Manuel. The graveyard has a lovely view...not that they can appreciate it, but the many visitors can. Thank you for your kind comments. Have a good evening.

What a wealth of lovely old churches England has. This is so attractive. I like the second shot particularly.

Thank you Jean. I love the history and the buildings, but with fewer people using them, their future must be uncertain. I know a couple that have become art centres, but those are in towns.

Quite a few of our smaller churches have been turned into homes but none as old as this.

I have noticed that it is mostly the smaller chapels that were formerly Methodist or Baptist and much simpler in design than the much older C of E. Not a conversion I would want to take on.

That is very true Maurice. I have only ever seen one thatched church, but apparently there are several, and I think one of them is in Norfolk...or it may be Suffolk.

Lovely images of this ancient church, Rosa. It looks remarkably substantial, I guess that's why it has lasted so well.
