The Old Foundry

The Old Foundry
I was sorting through some photo folders and remembered this one taken in Bourton, Dorset last year. I did not know there was ever a foundry in the village, but it has quite a history, especially during WWI when women were brought in to make Mills Bombs (hand grenades) as all the former male workers had been enlisted. 6 million Mills Bombs were produced there! A link below for anyone interested. I recognise many of the surnames in the link, belonging to people still living in the village.

Two PiPs.

Such a lovely composition Rosa. I love the way the huge wheels have be re-purposed as part of the entrance and they look really good. Two more lovely images in the PiPs, I especially like the close up of the gate and wheel.

Thanks also for the interesting link. It was sad to read that despite the arduous and dangerous work the women were paid less than the men and were totally let down by the Government of the day!

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
Thank you for your kind comments Keith. I'm afraid it was very common after both world wars to treat women in that way, even though they couldn't have done without their contributions. It's not very long ago that things changed. When I started work, not only was I paid less than a man but also paid less than women older than me, even though I was more qualified! Ah well, better now....isn't it!! ;-))

Take care and have a good evening Keith.

I love the perspective, Rosa. I find very effective the way the path and the walls act as lead-in lines to draw the eye to the building. I love also the colour contrast between the green metalwork and the orange walls. The historical information you have provided is very interesting. Cheers, Joe

The colours certainly stand out well Joe. I can't believe I didn't know about the old foundry. Bourton is only 3 miles away from where I live. There was a lovely old mill there at one time but very little of it remains. They are also building houses there now. Thanks for your kind comments. Cheers, Rosa.

I agree with Joe, the perspective is great and the information very interesting.
It's difficult to think of this place as a foundry where bombs were made...historical witness of hard times, harder than these , probably.
Thank you for sharing your find and notes, dear friend.
Do take care.

Thank you for your kind comments dear Adele. I find this kind of social history so fascinating and when I read the names in the link, I realised that many of the families still live in the village, and I was at school with some of them.

Take care and have a good evening my friend.

An impressive entrance, when I first looked I thought they were pit head winding wheels a lot of the villages North West of me have them as a reminder of their past. I wonder how many deaths their production was responsible for and that was only one factory

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
Maybe the wheels were made at the foundry Peter. Good local histy which I'm always pleased to know. I will look into it more.

Wonderful perspective and an interesting subject Rosa. Pretty sure they are pit head winding wheels put to good use instead on being scrapped. My grandfather was a coal miner and wheels like this would have been a familiar sight to him. The notes about the production of mills bombs was very interesting, not an activity normally associated with a rural village but of course times were not normal.

Enjoy your evening, Doug

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Doug Shepherd club
Thank you for your interest and kind comments Doug. I wonder if the foundry made the wheels. I don't know of any coal mines ever in Dorset, but there were some over the border in Somerset. It would be interesting to find out.

All the best,
Rosa.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to José Manuel Polo club
There was work going on with some large vehicles. I will have to return to see the progress. As it was the site of a foundry, I think the wheels must have been cast there. It has been suggested they were for coal mines, and I agree. However there were no coal mines in the county of Dorset. I would like to enquire further! Thank you for your interest and kind comments Jose Manuel.

A very impressive entrance with the gate and the wheels framing the more distant buildings. Women played an important part in both world wars but were quickly relegated back to domesticity when the men returned. When I began work in the 1950's I would have had to leave my job if I married. Jobs in the main reference library were reserved for men and once qualified they went out to take charge of branch libraries at a higher pay. Through no fault of their own they had no clue about lending libraries and relied on their female deputies who were paid less. Times have changed but although few men become professional librarians they were still getting a large proportion of the top jobs when I retired.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Jean
A part of our fairly recent history Jean. I hope they teach this side of social history in the schools now. It wasn't really talked of when I was at school. I will have to ask Sophie! Even in the 1970's married women were asked about having children when applying for a job. A lot has changed now, thankfully.

Hi Rosa

A very nice picture of our industrial history, which I like very much

Framing with the wheels makes a wonderful composition

These wheels appear to have come from the pit head gear at a coal mine, rather than a foundry, but as we learned in history, coal mining went hand in hand with iron making...

Best Wishes, a nice weekend, and stay safe!!
Peter

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter_Private_Box club
Hi Peter,
I thought they would probably have been made in the foundry. I don't see why they would be used there otherwise. There is a lot of work taking place further down the driveway. I will look forward to returning and investigating more! It's only 3 miles away, but in another tucked away location.
Take care and have a good weekend.
Best wishes,
Rosa.
