UTTERLY PICTURESQUE EVERYWHERE. St. Jean Pied-de-Port is a well-known stop on one of the most important pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela (around 60,000 pilgrims per year). This medieval town between the Basque coast and the Spanish border is also a must-see for anyone visiting the Basque Country. It owes its name to its location at the foot of the 1057-metre-high Roncevaux Pass (= port), which provides a route south of the Pyrenees.
