...on one side you can see the 11th-century Romanesque-Byzantine church of Saint-Étienne de Baïgorry (1st PiP), and on the other, this beautiful panorama of the mountains and river. Along the river are typically Basque houses. SUR LE PONT on voit d'un côté l'église Saint-Étienne de Baïgorry construite au XIe siècle dans le style romano-byzantin (1er PiP), de l'autre ce beau panorama sur la montagne et la rivière. Le long de celle-ci se trouvent des maisons typiquement basque. AUF DER BRÜCKE sieht man auf der einen Seite die Kirche Saint-Étienne de Baïgorry, die im 11. Jh. im romanisch-byzantinischen Stil erbaut wurde (1. PiP), auf der anderen Seite dieses wunderschöne Panorama auf die Berge und den Fluss. Entlang des Flusses stehen typisch baskische Häuser.

From the citadel's promontory , you can look out over the town from a height of 80 metres, with a wonderful panoramic view of the valley, the mountains, the Nive de Béhérobie river, the Irouléguy vineyards and the surrounding villages. Von der Zitadelle aus überragt man die Stadt um 80 m und hat einen herrlichen Panoramablick auf das Tal, die Berge, den Fluss Nive de Béhérobie, die Weinberge von Irouléguy und die umliegenden Dörfer.

A l’emplacement de l’ancien château médiéval, la citadelle se dresse au sommet de la colline de Mendiguren. Dominant la ville et la Nive de près de 80 m, elle est construite au XVIIe siècle à l’emplacement de l’ancien château des rois de Navarre, en pleine période de tensions religieuses et de rivalités entre la France et l’Espagne. Vauban renforce par la suite ses défenses, modernisant l’ensemble du système fortifié de la ville. Aujourd'hui c'est un collège qui accueille 223 élèves. MILITARY PAST. On the site of the former medieval castle, the citadel stands atop Mendiguren Hill. Dominating the town and the Nive River from a height of nearly 80 metres, it was built in the 17th century on the site of the former castle of the Kings of Navarre, at a time of religious tension and rivalry between France and Spain. Vauban later reinforced its defences, modernising the town's entire fortification system. Today it is a secondary school with 223 pupils. MILITÄRISCHE VERGANGENHEIT. An der Stelle der ehemaligen mittelalterlichen Burg thront die Zitadelle auf dem Mendiguren-Hügel. Sie überragt die Stadt und den Fluss Nive aus einer Höhe von fast 80 m und wurde im 17. Jh. an der Stelle der ehemaligen Burg der Könige von Navarra erbaut, zu einer Zeit religiöser Spannungen und Rivalitäten zwischen Frankreich und Spanien. Vauban verstärkte später ihre Verteidigungsanlagen und modernisierte das gesamte Befestigungssystem der Stadt. Heute ist sie eine Schule mit 223 Schülern.

This street climbs up towards the citadel, and pilgrims on the Way of St James, who have already walked a long way, must climb up to their hostels. But there are places to sit down everywhere. The "Rue de la Citadelle" is the liveliest street in St Jean-Pied-de-Port. LIEUX DE REPOS POUR PELERINS FATIGUES. St Jean Pied-de-Port est une étape renommée sur l’une des principales voies de pèlerinage vers Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle (environ 60 000 pèlerins par an). Situé entre la côte basque et la frontière espagnole, cette cité médiévale est aussi une destination incontournable au Pays Basque.Elle doit son nom à sa situation au pied du col (=port) de Roncevaux (alt. 1 057 m), qui permet de passer au sud des Pyrénées. UTTERLY PICTURESQUE EVERYWHERE. St. Jean Pied-de-Port is a well-known stop on one of the most important pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela (around 60,000 pilgrims per year). This medieval town between the Basque coast and the Spanish border is also a must-see for anyone visiting the Basque Country. It owes its name to its location at the foot of the 1057-metre-high Roncevaux Pass (= port), which provides a route south of the Pyrenees. ÜBERALL TOTAL MALERISCH. St. Jean Pied-de-Port ist eine bekannte Station auf einem der wichtigsten Pilgerwege nach Santiago de Compostela (rund 60 000 Pilger pro Jahr). Diese mittelalterliche Stadt zwischen der baskischen Küste und der spanischen Grenze ist ebenfalls ein Muss für jeden Besucher des Baskenlandes. Ihren Namen verdankt sie ihrer Lage am Fusse des 1057 m hohen Roncevaux-Passes (= port), der einen Weg südlich der Pyrenäen ermöglicht.

= le pont dit "romain". Même s'il n'est construit qu'en 1661, c'est ainsi que les Basques l'appellent. Il a longtemps été la principale voie permettant d'enjamber la Nive. Son arche en plein cintre lui donne le style roman. Le pavage du pont porte encore la marque des charrettes qui l'empruntaient autrefois. "ERROMATAR ZUBIA" = the so-called "Roman" bridge. Although it was only built in 1661, that's what the Basques call it. It was for a long time the main river crossing. Its semicircular arch gives it a Romanesque style. The bridge's paving still bears the traces of the carts that once crossed it. "ERROMATAR ZUBIA" = die sogenannte "römische" Brücke. Auch wenn sie erst 1661 erbaut wurde, nennen die Basken sie so. Lange Zeit war sie der wichtigste Weg, um den Fluss Nive zu überqueren. Ihr Rundbogen verleiht ihr einen romanischen Stil. Das Pflaster der Brücke trägt noch immer die Spuren der Karren, die sie früher befuhren.

Since 1924, the rack train makes it possible to reach the summit without effort. From the pass of St. Ignace, the famous cogwheel train climbs in 35 min. to the top of the Rhune. It crosses a wild nature and the road of the sheep and "pottoks", these small endemic wild horses living in freedom on the slopes of the mountain (see PiP's).

There is a nice view to the "Rhune", the highest summit around. The scanned postcard shows quite well the proximity of this mountain to the ocean.

FÜR ERIKA - ich denke, du wirst ihn lieben, diesen Blick... Entouré de montagnes, Sare, au Pays Basque, est classé parmi les plus beaux villages de France. Surrounded by mountains, Sare is ranked among the most beautiful villages in France.

Parmi les nombreux ponts à Sare, le plus connu est celui de "Granadako-Zubia" dit "pont romain" réservé à l'usage des piétons. Among the many bridges, the most famous is "Granadako-Zubia", known as the "Roman bridge" and reserved for pedestrians.

Espelette is known for its dried red peppers, used whole or ground to a hot powder. The peppers are hung to dry outside many of the houses and shops in the village during the summer (see PiP). They are sold in the town's Wednesday covered market and are honoured in a festival on the last Sunday in October.
