HWW ~ Heron in the park

Our local park is the home for a number of birds and fowl, especially near the lake and large duck pond. This Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) is keeping his very keen eye on the lake which is full of fish. I was told that it nested nearby.
I often see herons around my home town of Oldham, as they stand perfectly still looking for moving fish. In fact I once had one come down to my garden pond which had a number of large Coy Carp, on a Christmas day, and it swept off after swallowing one whole. After that I fitted a big net over the water.

Cheers for this David. It was posing very nicely as I took a few shots. I had never seen a heron in my garden until that time and we were some way from a river or pond. Our fish pond went when we sold the house.

Herons are amazing so close to dinosaurs and eat all sizes of meals. I heard the same story as yours about the carp from a local who also has netting but does still try to fish (unsuccessfully so far) through the net.

Roger (Grisly) ^club

Nice capture Herb, one of the local pubs had a fenced off pond in the beer garden where customers could watch and feed the fish, until they all disappeared after one of these was spotted in the area, HWW!

Thanks Roger. Yes once they spot a pond with fat fish, they have a feast. I suppose the fish don't stand a chance to hide or get away. I was lucky with only one, I think, fatality.

Thanks Peter. I think I saw my first heron whilst on a boat in the Norfolk broads aged about 19, in the early 70's. I though I had seen a remarkable thing.
