HWW ~ Lapwings over Harrop Edge

HWW ~ Lapwings over Harrop Edge
A walk along this Saddleworth high lane gives us a rare treat to see these Lapwings. Here we see a pair in the background performing a courtship dance and the one in the front shows of its flying skills too. Of course we are bordered here by our traditional dry stone walls which were in fact being re-built here along the much of its 1.5mile lane length.
Lapwing: Vanellus vanellus, also known as the peewit in imitation of its display calls, its common name describes its wavering flight. Its black-and-white appearance and round-winged shape in flight make it distinctive, even without its splendid crest. This familiar Farmland, bird has suffered significant declines recently and is now a Red List species.
The PiP shows just a part of these walls being re-constructed.

Enjoy the day.

Thanks Gudrun. I have not seen them for many years now but I do not come here so often. We used to see them every spring from our static caravan in the Yorkshire Dales. Glad you liked the walls too.

Dry stone walling is a true art as shown in these excellent images Herb,
Our Lapwings are being driving away by continual house building, HWW!

You are right there and I suspect the stone masons will be busy here for some years to come. I have not seen Lapwings for many years now but I do not come here too often. We used to see them every spring from our static caravan in the Yorkshire Dales.

Thanks Gordon. Yes we used to see them often near Gisburn when we had the static there. Not seen them around here for years but it maybe that these are here every year. there were about ten of them in total.

A wicked shot Herb. I love the dark skies and the lapwings. The dry stone walls always make an interesting addition but I thing the track disappearing over the hill is an invitation to explore. Well captured and have a good day. HWW

Good that you enjoyed this landscape composition as well as the Lapwings my friend. A wonderful sight as I watched for some time the swooping courtship rituals of these splendid birds.
