The Menai Suspension Bridge
A look at this famous bridge from the Ilse of Anglesey. We have just driven over it from the city of Bangor with its castle on the left (just out of sight) and in the background we have the foothills of the Snowdonia National Park. The water here is the narrowest separation between the mainland of Wales and the Isle of Anglesey; the fast flowing Menai Straits
The bridge was designed by Thomas Telford and completed in 1826 after starting in 1819. It was the world’s first major suspension bridge and is 417 metres long and is 31 metres above the water. In 1893 its wooden decks were replaced by steel and in 1938/40 its iron chains were also replaced by steel. It still carries traffic and is a Grade 1 listed structure.
Enjoy full screen.
