1000 Places To See Before You Die...
... 1001, if someone dies.

Generation Game
Growing up, I was lucky enough to live in a multi-generational home. My Grandmother died when I was in my early teens, cancer, and my Grandfather was struggling, living on his own. Oh, he could cook, do his own laundry and so on, but after a while it became clear that he wasn’t looking after himself very well. He was living in a 3-bedroomed council house, as were we, with my mother. They approached the council, and offered to swap the 2 houses, for one 4-bedromed house. I can’t remember how long…

Shattered
This week, I have been, mostly, shattered. I worked an extra 10 hours, making my weekly total 22 hours. It was hard work. I didn’t mind doing it, however the one day I was a tad miffed. It was a day I wasn’t supposed to be in anyway, I did a 6-hour shift, and even then, two people asked if I could stay extra. I apologised, but said no, I really wanted to get home, and I reminded them I was working 10 hours overtime this week anyway. Each day that I’ve worked 6 hours, I’ve fallen asleep in front…

A Time to Stay Home...
After the announcement yesterday that one person in the next town over from me has been diagnosed with Covid-19 (two more have since tested positive), I made the hard decision to take time off from my job until it is safe to return. The job entails serving customers directly on the sales floor, checking them out at cash registers, handling their money and merchandise they touch, all of which effectively prevents me from practicing "social distance" from the customers I serve. While I have no "p…

The "Corona" Way of Life...
It seems the Corona virus has infected more than just people; it has infected a way of life. The impact it has in my country (USA) is downright unprecedented! All our public schools in Maryland are closed for two weeks. Other states are also closing their schools. All sports venues are cancelled indefinitely, as is entertainment centers like Broadway. Restaurants are doing deliveries only, no sit down dining. Businesses who service large crowds or who must phyically interact with customers (such…

New Year's Dishonour's List
Each year, in the UK, we have a New Year honours list. This year I’ve decided to make my own list. Top of the list goes to… no surprises, my neighbours. Christmas Eve, around 8pm, they had visitors. They were noisy all night and kept my son awake though I did manage to fall asleep from sheer exhaustion. They woke me about 4 times in the night, generally being raucous. People went out around 5am, and the house was quiet as the grave for the next 24 hours, which was a nice change. Friday night…

Goodwill
As regular readers will know, in early December the bathroom light bulb blew. We’d been using a battery-powered lantern in the bathroom for almost 3 weeks when the agent phoned to come and replace the bulbs in the back bedroom. I stated that I’d replaced one, didn’t want the other replaced, thanks – 4 spots in a small bedroom is far too bright – however the bathroom bulb has blown and if they’re willing… The following day a man came out, with his own ladder, and sorted out the bathroom for us. T…

Foodies
My son and I will happily confess to being foodies. We eat to live, though if we can enjoy preparing, and eating, our food then so much the better. Of late, we’ve been cutting back on the meat for various reasons and have enjoyed sourcing, and trying, different recipes. Invariably though, we’ve sometimes returned to old favourites and simply substituted pulses for the meat. Last time we had chicken tagine we didn’t enjoy it so much, so recently I left out the chicken and the chicken stock cu…

Reposting
I downloaded a lot of full size photos from Ipernity when the 100 gig cap was introduced. I did miss having them on Ipernity so this week i have been reducing the size of the photos and posting them back into Ipernity. The process is now complete and I have the photos back on Ipernity. They are all in albums and I find it easier to look for albums when I want to find a photo. I hope I will be able to get out now with my camera and start to add new photos this week.

Shadow Light and Lines
Shadows, light & lines captures the eye from this weathered wall. Believe it or not, this photo was made with the iPad Mini camera. Something that I always love to see is elements that create strong composition in the square format. The morning sunlight through the trees casts a shadow onto the wall of this vintage garage in my neighborhood. The vertical lines provided by the plants create an added touch of the grid pattern needed to complete this moment in time. I chose black and white bec…

Autumnal
Despite the promise of warmer temperatures, and sunnier days, it’s starting to feel very autumnal here. I don’t know if it’s the wildly swinging temperature, or the heavy rainfall and high winds, but this morning, whilst walking the dog, I was kicking through leaves as if it were autumn already. Having said that, in the UK, it will be autumn soon it just seems to have come around quickly this year. The weather made me think of my Grandparents. For a time, we lived with them during the breaku…

Do Pro's Make Better Pictures?
I've been a photographer for several decades, not counting from when I was a kid, and I've heard many myths and truths about what and who makes better pictures.

Noise
I’ve commented before about the pro’s of living near a town centre; easy access to shops, library, GP and so on, the con of living here, is also proximity to all the shops and of course the people. For over a week, the freaking circus was in town and we had our ears assaulted by an a-hole with a megaphone and pounding music. The music might have been nice, but all we heard was the boom-boom of it due to the bass being turned up too high. Each night there were 2 shows by the sounds of it, with ev…

Snow
After a week of sunshine and warm temperatures a while back, we’ve had noting but rain and wind ever since, and Sunday morning we awoke to a light dusting of snow for goodness’ sake. It’s windy, bitterly cold, and I’m so over winter now. It’s a mere 10 days until the official first day of spring in the UK and I can’t see the weather improving any time soon though I always live in hope. Despite the weather I’ve managed to pot on raspberry and blackberry bushes bought for a mere £2 each from Morri…
