250 years
250 years ago today (22 April 1770), Captain Cook and the ship "HMS Endeavour" came past here, mapping Australia's east coast and naming those islands the "Tollgates" and the waters inshore from them "Batemans Bay" (the latter very possibly after Nathaniel Bateman, under whom he had served on the ship "Northumberland"in Canada).
Apparently the local indigenous Yuin people, who had been here for some 50,000 years, were watching with some concern as the strange object went past on the ocean. It also is possible that Cook was not the first European along this coast, though that is the accepted history. Best viewed large.
Explored.

What an amazing place to discover and be able to name. Happy anniversary. :)
Sarah P. club has replied to Xata clubtiabunna club has replied to Xata clubI guess we settlers all owe Cook something, and he was an extraordinarily capable mariner whose voyages and skills we should remember with admiration.
But I think we should celebrate our National Day on a date which does not commemorate the European claim upon this land.
Giant hugs...xxxx

A very nice picture, with great lighting giving fantastic colours
It is quite possible that other were there before Cook, but never returned..
Here in Wales we know of the discovery of America a long time before Columbus...
