250 years

250 years
250 years ago today (22 April 1770), Captain Cook and the ship "HMS Endeavour" came past here, mapping Australia's east coast and naming those islands the "Tollgates" and the waters inshore from them "Batemans Bay" (the latter very possibly after Nathaniel Bateman, under whom he had served on the ship "Northumberland"in Canada).

Apparently the local indigenous Yuin people, who had been here for some 50,000 years, were watching with some concern as the strange object went past on the ocean. It also is possible that Cook was not the first European along this coast, though that is the accepted history. Best viewed large.

Explored.

You’ve really captured a magical soft light here, George.
I guess we settlers all owe Cook something, and he was an extraordinarily capable mariner whose voyages and skills we should remember with admiration.
But I think we should celebrate our National Day on a date which does not commemorate the European claim upon this land.

Yes, re our National Day, I have to agree that we should have something less divisive, Diana. Maybe when we can finally celebrate Republic Day? :-) XX

Nice rich color! One can deeply regret the European impact on the locals, but their sailing skill is beyond question. I'm told that if you want to sail to the Americas from Europe to this day you take Columbus's route--and he worked it out from scratch!

Thanks, Steve. Yes, at that time Europe was frantically colonising everywhere. As you note though, Cook's sailing and navigational skills were superb.

Hi George

A very nice picture, with great lighting giving fantastic colours

It is quite possible that other were there before Cook, but never returned..
Here in Wales we know of the discovery of America a long time before Columbus...

A dreamy landscape. Thank you for the fascinating history write-up! Before I went there I read "The Fatal Shore" and was enthralled and often shocked by its history. Another one that looks good is "The Tyranny of Distance." Sounds like an interesting concept.

Thanks very much, Diane. I think "The Fatal Shore" maybe dwells a little much on the cruelties in the convict system. In essence, for most convicts it involved indentured labour for free settlers and, provided there were no problems, after a period they were released on pardon. It became much worse for those who fell foul of the system though!

Many thanks for your kind comments, everyone. It would have been good to have been able to commemorate Cook's visit here with a few friends and a couple of drinks - sadly, isolation for CV19 put paid to that! I wonder what Cook would have made of the strange world today?
