Masked Lapwing

Masked Lapwing
These large plovers (and they were previously known as "Spur-winged Plovers") are native across eastern and northern Australia. Usually found in pairs, they're not to be trifled with during the nesting season, when they attack like homing missiles should anyone approach their nesting area.

Explored.

A lovely bird. They sound similar to arctic terns who also attack like homing missiles and occasionally draw blood. This year some will get peace as tourist boats won't be going to the island bird reserves.

We saw these when in Australia but did not experience their dive bombing capabilities, probably because it was not nesting season. Great photo that brings back many memories.
