Dry dam

Dry dam
I'm not able to do much photography lately, so this is from a dip into the archives - and my first digital camera. It shows a dam on our former rural property during what became known as the "Millenium Drought" which ran from about 1998 to 2009. The very minimal fence around the dam was needed to stop cattle entering and potentially becoming bogged. It worked well, helped by 10,000V and the cattle stayed out. HFF and best wishes for the weekend, everyone.

Explored.

Scotland is so wet it is hard to imagine eleven years of drought but this image does bring it home. Hope all is well with you both.

Thank you, Jean. We had other water for the cattle, the real problem was the pasture. I'm glad to say that Pauline's condition is slowly picking up.

Glad to hear the news about Pauline. I'm good to hear you are doing your best to self- isolate too. Give my regards to Pauline.

Great shot, George!
Amazing that plants - even if sparse - still thrive despite such drought.
HFF and best wishes for the weekend also for you both.

Thank you very much. The amount of pasture was my main concern, but with rain it did indeed always respond. Best wishes for the coming week.

Thank you, Roger. Although very minimal, the cattle certainly treated the fence with respect. Best wishes for the coming week.

To think we complain about the constant rainfall over here George - it is hard to imagine such long periods of drought. It turned your dam into a little oasis! HFF and have a good weekend

Thanks you, Carol. Since the first few years of drought, I have always promised myself I'll never again complain about too much rain. :-)

We have the same here: no rain at all... dams at less than 40% and dry season arriving...
HFF George, hoping the best for both of you.

GrahamH club has replied to Xata club
You have 40% in your dams? Wow, towns near me are having water trucked in daily as their dams are all but empty.
Xata club has replied to GrahamH club
Same in my house uphills in a small village: water trucked every day...
Here we have that amount in two dams but not enough for the summer vacation invasion, we receive about 100.000 people that will "drink" from there...

Thank you, Isabel. Heading into the dry season with low dams is very concerning. All my very best wishes for these crazy times.

That same drought had my city and it region's supply dams down to 7%.
Then we had some rain for a week and they rose to 8%.
Then we had a huge flood which in 24 hours had water over the spillways of all three dams (and most roads in the region seriously damaged).

Thanks, Graham, Dorothea MacKellar had it pretty right with her poem on Australia about "droughts and flooding rains".

Thank you, Gudrun. Fortunately we did have some other water sources for our cattle. It would have been much like this earlier this year when the fires were running, but there since has been quite reasonable rain. Best wishes for these crazy times.

tiabunna club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne club
Thank you, Rosa. While we always had other sources of water, the limited pasture growth was an ongoing worry. I'm very pleased to advise that the fires now are extinguished by good and widespread rain in February, also that Pauline's condition is improving.
