Neolithic Site ~ White Sheet Hill

Neolithic Site ~ White Sheet Hill
White Sheet Hill is in the county of Wiltshire. As one of the most westerly areas of downland in Britain the area is noted for its chalky farmland which contains a rich variety of rare and protected fauna and flora. The hill is also the site of a neolithic causeway camp and barrows; and an Iron Age hill fort. The Roman road which runs along the hill was at one time the main route through the Selwood Forest.

A beautifully composed landscape with the patchwork of fields highlighted by the sun. It's a wonderful area for prehistoric remains.

Thank you Jean. I tried my hardest to walk up the steps you see, but the drop was too much and I chose a different route!!

I really like the way you've composed this one Rosa, with the patchwork of fields nicely sandwiched between the hills. The sky is particularly lovely and I like the leading line of the path.

Beautifully done!

Thank you Keith. That was almost the last blue in the sky of the day! As I have mentioned in previous comments, I really wanted to climb those steps to the top, but the top was still a long way off and the drop was too scary! I found another, gentler route...but I will do it one day!!

Great composition, Rosa. I love the sense of depth you have captured. The clouds sitting just above the distant horizon add to the composition. I love also the fact the different parts of the land are very roughly triangular in shape. I think I would be as white as a sheet if I walked to the top of that hill. Cheers, Joe

A wonderful area to walk with the reward of marvellous views with little sign of building, it looks as though that path needs to be closed to allow the erosion to start to heal. The sort of path that is more dangerous coming down a loose stone can put you on your back. I hope your Wednesday is a nice one Rosalyn

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
Thank you Peter. It is cared for by the N.T. and is part of the Stourhead estate. There are others ways to the top, which I am still finding. Hope you have a good Wednesday.

A super place for a walk to take in all the surrounding scenery, Rosa. It looks as if White Sheet Hill is the only place to get a view of the flat lands.

I love it up there Amelia. Just need to get to the top an easier way.
It's very close to Stourhead.

Thank you very much for your kind comments Gunter. It is difficult to see imagine how it must have looked so long ago, but good to still find traces of an earlier time.

All the best, Rosa
