The PS Waverley

The PS Waverley
...paddling alongside the pier at Southend, as she was about to become my transport up the Thames to Tower Bridge pier.

The PS Waverley was built in 1946 and named after Sir Walter Scott's first novel.
She is the last seagoing passenger-carrying paddle steamer in the world!

Looks great and quite remarkable that she was built so (relatively) recently.

Yes George. I was surprised that she was not built at least ten years earlier. I suspect the blueprints were drawn up in the 30s but building plans were interrupted.
The trip on her was a sheer delight and I highly recommend the experience.

Great to see, I remember crossing from Portsmouth to Ryde on the old paddle steamers in my childhood; excellent image!

Thanks a lot, Roger. Going over to the IOW for you as a youngster must have been very exciting for you and must have provided some vivid memories.
I don't recall seeing any youngsters on the Waverly...just a few hundred grandparents.

Thank you, Tanja. I plan to remain on board until the end of the journey.
I am slow at the best of times but getting re-established over on the dark side at the same time is making me even slower, so apologies for my late response.

She sure is, Gudrun and provides many memorable journeys, just like Ipernity did when she was fully afloat.
I hope the group stays together and the few remaining stragglers keep up with us, if only to maintain contact.

Many thanks for your recognition, Keith. All your thoughtful comments have helped me reach that mini goal.
I also think it has a kind of vintage look about it, particularly when viewed large.
The whole experience of seeing and travelling on the Waverley was well worth it, including me staggering the full length of Southend pier.
