Alan Newman's photo of 0-6-0STs Portbury & Percy at Avonmouth Dock - 7.9.1956

Alan Newman's photo of 0-6-0STs Portbury & Percy at Avonmouth Dock - 7.9.1956
Built in 1917 & 1918 respectively, by Avonside Engineering, these two small saddle tanks were owned by and worked for the Port of Bristol Authority.
Alan Newman was a colleague and friend of my father and a well respected railway photographer. This little print was glued into Dad's engine spotting log for the mid to late 1950s. I hadn't seen it until today when I was looking to confirm the details of the neighbouring photo. in a later log.
Portbury has been preserved and is, at the last mention I can find, at the Bristol Harbour Railway.

Roger Dodger, , homaris and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo

I was ten when this was taken - so a bit less of the old! I prefer my contributions to Pictorials to be my work. That group is, to me. more about making a picture than recording a scene, but thanks for the interest and suggestion, Ruth.

Alan's photos are usually interesting and can be of high quality. This little print certainly has the interest element, especially as Portbury has been preserved. Thanks for your slightly enigmatic comment.

Sorry, Phil. I was about to add some details ...
I was born in Bristol, at about the time that photograph was taken; my father (quite some years later, had a good deal to do with the grain handling systems there) and finally, Portbury has visited Beamish and I'm 'friends' with a couple of similar engines (or at least their owners !) ...

Thanks for explaining your background and the relevance of these two to it. As you may have gathered from the large number of railway photos from the Somerset & Bristol area, my family lived in three places in Somerset from the '50s to the '70s. I did my social work training at Bristol Poly, while lodging with my parents at Highbridge, having moved to London to work.
