. . .

. . .
Taken through the windshield in Florida -
On the way to Melbourne for a percussion class -
No way to pull over for this -
So, propped the camera on the dash -
Click -
Have seen many odd things hauled on the highway -
But never saw someone take their mattress -

Oh, yes. Seeing something like this in town on a side street is one thing -- but on the Interstate ?

I have seen it several times. One person had tied a rope around the mattress and through the side windows. The mattress was folded far back by the wind. Watcha gonna do if you don't have a pickup?

Yes, a pickup would have been handy! You do what you have to do. Our daughter had some things in a storage unit in Florida but she had moved to North Carolina - not being able to fit all into the vehicle she had.
Her Mother-In-Law was going to visit and told me she could take some things in her van -- similar to the one in the photo.
So, I met her at the storage unit and began removing the items requested. Asked MIL to please start loading them into her van.
Answer: " I don't know how to pack" ...
Sigh --
I literally stuffed her van with as much as possible. Then, there were more things that would only go on the roof.
Put them up there -- tied down with only thing available ... speaker wires. Told her to go down the street and get some bunji cords to make it secure.
Asked my daughter how it all arrived ... "Mom, she still had the speaker wires around it all."
Good thing I tied it all securely ... and no, that MIL wasn't blonde..

I've seen it before too. At this point you hope that the mattress is well tied down!

The only time I did something similar - our son, his friend and I went to cut down a tree for Christmas at a lot the owner wanted cleared .. having people cut their own trees was his method of clearing it !
No charge for the tree, but no assistance from owner - since it was a free tree.

Well, we cut it down and took it over to my 1961 VW to haul back to town - a pretty good distance. Tied it with sturdy rope, but our son sat in the passenger seat with his arm out the window holding the tree - just in case.
His friend sat in the back seat --- tree-watching to see if the tree came loose or shifted any.

We did get it home, but not without many stares !

Oh, how I wish I'd had a photo of that.
