Swans.

Swans.
Quite an overnight transformation. The snow has not completely gone but most of it has and the road is clear. This gave me a push and quite a bit of tidying and cleaning got done. I swopped round the sofas to give the one I lie on all the time a rest and put my fleecy throw in the washing machine. After lunch I went to the Pillars for bread but bought a few goodies as well naturally. Had a walk and a chat with a bloke who worked as a guide and wanted to know bits of Falkland Estate's history. Afterwards I went to Letham to photograph birds on the ponds but not a bird in sight. The ponds were still frozen solid and the birds had decamped elsewhere. Went to Birnie where there was a lot of icy slush on the paths and kept missing shots. Swans walked away from me, I had the wrong lens on to get a good shot of a rainbow, it just wasn't my day. Going back to the car a family were feeding swans so at last my luck was in. It's funny how something always turns up. And my two alcohol free weeks are up so I am going to settle on my sofa with a big glass of wine and some seaweed crisps.

The main picture is a cracker with the two swans in trail formation and everything hanging out for landing on the ice. Amazing shot Jean. I guess the swan in the equally fine PiP is undertaking post-flight maintenance checks.

Actually pre flight preening. A family had been feeding them.

Nice capture of this pair of mute swans, was it a take off or landing Jean?. I can't wait to get back to the wetlands again, I hope Boris eases outdoor activity next month.

It was take off Maurice and with pretty well no warning. It was a case of point and shoot and hope for the best.

A magnificent wildlife shot, shot. Your timing was perfect. I love the wintery feel to the image. It makes me feel cold just to look at it. All the best, Joe

Thank you Joe. It was a case of point and shoot. The camera settings were not right for in flight and I was expecting very blurred images so to get anything was a nice surprise.

I love a swan picture, but a swan pictured in the snow.....WOW! You have caught them beautifully in flight Jean, but my favourite is the PiP. The light and the feather detail is fabulous!

Sometimes a grab shot will turn out unexpectedly well............and this is certainly the case here. You must have cat-like reflexes Jean!

I really like the image in the PiP too..........the light is particularly lovely!

I too miss your daily diary.............and I suspect I'm not alone :-)

I'm kind of used to insects and birds where you just have to shoot not knowing what you'll get. Although I'm quite surprised at still having the ability to catch falling things before they reach the ground. Good at knocking them over in the first place too. Thanks for your nice comment about the diary. I could easily post it again. I'll have a think.

A fabulous capture, Jean. I sometimes spot swans taking off or landing, but by the time I've switched the camera on ......

I'd been photographing the swans and had just turned away to go back to the car when they flew so it was a real grab shot.
