Happy new year!

I took a lovely photo for New Year's Day but my computer has been refusing to recognize the SD card, so that went down the tubes/up the spout/out the window, so here once again is an old photo that I don't think I have posted before.

I believe this was inspired by Diane Arbus -- not directly, of course, but through some abstraction that my unconscious drew from her photographs, or some of them, and then burst into my consciousness one day -- but I have no evidence to support this belief. Perhaps it was the Virgin Mary, or the muse of photography, or perhaps it was simply a random firing of neurons. Or perhaps you will conclude it is completely uninspired, which, to my mind, could well be true. La pensée a été donnée à l'homme pour lui raconter des histoires, or something like that. It's quite the snare, at least.

Anyway, all the best for the new year, don't take any wooden nickels (although they're probably worth more than real nickels now), don't mind me.

UPDATE (January 5): I tried fixing the ghost on the part of the cord/flex above the floor, and when that failed I tried re-editing, and when that failed I decided to throw myself on everyone's mercy. The merciful are blessed, you know.

Steve Bucknell, appo-fam, J. Gafarot, kiiti and 13 other people have particularly liked this photo

Well, that looks like a lamp from my college days. Not really like, but the same ethos.

The lines in the shot are intriguing. Mostly a bold vertical and solid horizontals, leavened by the random curves of the lamp cord and the perspectives of the floor tiles. It does have something classic about it.

Yhanks, Bob. I just noticed, though, that this is way over-sharpened. I need new glasses.

Such a simple, but beautiful composition. I like the trailing electrical flex and the textures in the fabric of the lamp shade. The wooden tiles are really beautiful.

Very nicely done John! I wish you a happy and healthy New Year.

Thanks, Keith. Somehow I have managed not to damage the parquet even after living here two years.

And a happy and healthy new year to you.

Happy New Year, John! Treat yourself to a new HD card. Love this photo and the Virgin Mary theory. The lamp looks very virginal to me. Plus, it could be enlightened.

And a happy new year to you to you, too, Sarah. The lamp is a hand-me-down from my brother's mother-in-law. When I'm on Skype with the light on behind me the circular spot of light on the ceiling makes it seem as if I have a halo. Well, I think that's the explanation. I spose I could just be angelic -- I just remembered that a former co-worker once told me I was Christlike after I yelled at him while, um. reproving his behaviour. This was at a Roman Catholic organization. So ever since I've been serving bread and fishes to everyone I know. I just hope I never run into any money-changers in a temple. You can get arrested for that now.

If I ever make it to Ontario, I will expect a serving of bread and fish. Preferably with wine. You do know how to turn water into wine, right?

I've never tried (when I was drinking, wine was dirt cheap), but I could give 'er a go. As for fish, this region is renowned for its perch. Un régal sans égal.
