Arthur Meighen Building (Charles B. Dolphin, 1954), Toronto. It houses offices of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada. The vigil on the sidewalk, organized by Nishnawbe Aski Nation, started on July 20 -- three months old today.

Nice colour pairing between this pic and the one before it in your stream, John. :)

BTW, I'd forgotten how interesting the bottom metal panelling was. I do of course remember the disk at the top, which I photographed:

Anyway, great capture of the conflict between the government's desired messaging - yay, celebrate 150 - and the aboriginal protest of living conditions, a sobering reality.

Thanks, Will. A good capture of the disc. Dolphin has reliefs on other buildings. At the Air Canada Centre there's one from its days as a postal facility showing Indians attacking a mail train. That never happened in Canada (if anywhere), so maybe a plaque to acknowledge that might help in reconciliation. Better would be to commission another relief to replace it.

One of the reasons I like Douglas Coupland's War of 1812 memorial at Fleet and Bathurst is that it makes the point that history degenerates into stereotypes.

A very poignant image and link John....................suicide (particularly by the young) has been in the news over here lately as well. So sad.

I agree, Keith. One of the problems here is that many of the reserves with this problem are isolated in the North. Out of sight, out of mind. Another factor, I think, is the absence of reserves near Toronto. The closest I can think of is 60 miles away. In other words, even reserves in the South are out of sight and mind for a large portion of the population.

Nice urban shot. Pity that people have to take action like this to get listened to, and even then sometimes nothing gets done.

John FitzGerald club has replied to Jean
Thanks, Jean. So far nothing has been done.

Nope, nothing gets done south of you, either. The suicide rate goes up and up and up in the Native population. Government and the public are actively indifferent, if I may use that contradiction in terms. Maybe passive-aggressive is the right one. They are discarded citizens.

That pretty much sums up the approach here, too, Diane.
