Kern Westside oil CleanHarbors (1540)

Kern Westside oil CleanHarbors (1540)
Updated 1/31/2015: Based on an article in today's LA Times (see link below), "The influx to the landfill, about 25 miles west of Bakersfield, came from facilities that generate copper-contaminated sludge, soil and fluids, including wastewater treatment plants, cleanup sites, mining operations and geothermal power plants, said Phillip Retallick, Clean Harbors’ senior vice president for compliance." Thus my earlier statement that the plant served the nearby oil industry was only partially correct. (http://www.latimes.com/local/california/la-me-toxic-releases-20150131-story.html)

The article was about released toxic waste, but as the facility states, it is inappropriate to say 'released' since the waste is contained by accepted state mandated procedures and there is no release to the environment. (Though they don't note the impact of the truck traffic or of trucks without appropriate coverage of cargo)

The waste mound is much larger and higher than it looks -- the device on top of the hill to the left of center is the size of truck trailer. See the large size of the picture, or the satellite view, to get a sense of the size of the waste pile.

I'd hate to be downwind of that.

I was, actually in this case it is so processed that there doesn't seem to be odor.

It's almost worse that it's odorless. Winds will pick all that stuff up and send it across the valley as a toxic dust. And considering just how much agriculture there is downwind of this, that's not a fun food chain to consider.

A news article in today's LA Times provided additional detail on this facility. I have update the description to include that material.
