CA -99 old route (1530)

CA -99 old route (1530)
The former route of CA-99 in the southern Central Valley, about 10 miles south of Bakersfield. Considering the ugliness of the modern CA-99, I was surprised to see that the former route was a divided highway with curbs on the median and tree-lined landscaping.

I find 99 an interesting entity, in that I can think of find very few states that have built such a significant, limited access divided highway all on their own outside the federal highway system. Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Florida each have their own parkway systems, though Oklahoma eventually got the feds to absorb most of theirs, and Kentucky's trying. There may be a limited access highway similar to this somewhere in the Northeast I'm forgetting.

The old road looks more inviting, but I wouldn't want to drive it with the volume of truck traffic I saw on the new road.

Actually 99 was US-99. In Oregon there are two 99's, OR-99E and OR-99W that are the old portion of US-99 and run fairly parallel to I-5. In Washington, the old (and being torn down) Alaska Way viaduct on the Seattle waterfront is the old US-99 and marked as WA-99. Per Wikipedia, US-99 was decommissioned in 1968. I'm sure that much of the money for maintaining the 99 as a freeway in California comes from the feds.
