Cardoness Castle (PiP)

Taken at Cardoness Castle, which sadly was closed to the public when we visited for safety reasons.

The castle is a Scottish tower house built in the late 15th century as a fortified residence for the McCullochs of Myreton andit it is situated just south west of the Gatehouse of Fleet in Kircudbrightshire. From the top there are views of Fleet Bay and the Solway Firth.
The castle was abandoned in the late 17th century following the murder of a neighbour, William Gordon, by Sir Godfrey McCulloch. Sir Godfrey escaped but was later arrested in Edinburgh and executed in 1697 , beheaded by'the Maiden', a type of Scottish guillotine.

The castle is now in the hands of Historic Environment Scotland.

The PiP is a converted cottage used as a ticket office, shop and means of entrance to the castle and grounds.

A shame it was closed when you visited Carol. Two lovely shots and good information. It has a grisly past as most castles do! My favourite is the PiP....very pretty!

Thank you very much Rosa, - not as grisly as some I have to say but nearly all castles seem to have stories and legends attached to them. I guess most were designed for defence so battles and bloodshed and killings and disputes over land and possessions were probably the norm.
High level inspections are being carried out on the masonry so it is closed to the public at the moment which is a shame.

To be honest my prefeence is the PiP but the history goes with the castle really so it had to be the main image.

How marvelous to have such an historical structure still standing.

We have visited this castle way back in time, and I must look up my archives. The gardens didn't look as nice as this does here.
