Storm over Blackhouses PiP HFF!

Storm over Blackhouses PiP HFF!
Taken at the Skye Museum of Island Life. When open visitors can wander around this island 'village' and get a real understanding of how harsh island life could be. From the largest of the crofts to smithy, barn, weavers' cottage and Ceilidh House the crofts or 'blackhouses' are equipped as they would have been around the close of the 19th century and feature tools used at the time and even an old hand loom.

Each croft would have bagpipes, a fiddle or Jewish harp as this was the their entertainment through the harsh winters, and the Ceilidh house was their meeting place. The Ceilidh House has a gallery of photos of island life in it today.

A peat fire provided heat and was where the cooking was done and lighting was by a cruise, a lamp burning fish liver oil.

Caught in the light before the approaching storm the crofts look quite attractive. I have added a black and white version in the PiP which I felt fitted the mood of the harder times back then.

I have added some Ceilidh music in the form of The Drams Ceilidh Band and 'Strip the Willow'

Love these houses!
Ecobird club has replied to Stephan Fey club
Thank you very much Stefan. The walls would be up to three feet thick and stone and other materials were whatever was to hand. As there were few trees on Skye timber would be difficult to source and driftwood would have been used. Shipwrecks also provided timber and crofts were often buildt as a joint effort between neighbours.

A dramatic sky over these wonderful old houses with stonework so random it's magical, I like the grass lines leading the eye and the amazing thatched roofs, Large is superb.

Thank you very much Roger. The crofts look really attractive but I imagine they were quite basic with a pot on the fire for cooking and water to be carried from a well, - hard work and little privacy. On the upside I would think there would have been a great sense of community

Thank you very much Steve. It would have been tough but I imagine the sense of community was really strong, helping each other build crofts and working together, then making music together and dancing in the Ceilidh house.

A most interesting capture Carol. I have seen the odd crofters place ('blackhouses') in Scotland but never been inside one. Thanks for sharing -ah got the fence now too.

Thank you very much Herb. We once stayed in a croft though it had been updated of course and had full amenities. These were basic at best but if you are ever near Hungladder it is worth a look, once it is open again of course.
I am pleased you enjoyed the Ceilidh music which I added as it seemed to match up with the pictures

Keep warm Herb. Been looking at images of the snow disrupion in the Highlands, -stops us grumbling about a bit of rain!!

Both versions are wonderful, but exceptionally I prefer the colored version here, as it reflects the joy of life of the people of that time, expressed, i.a., through the music they made especially in the winter months for their entertainment.

Ecobird club has replied to * ઇઉ * club
Thank you very much * ઇઉ *. I do love that sense of community and the gathering together to make music and dance. I also prefer the coloured version, but wanted to show the contrast and reflect the austerity of everyday life at that time so added the black and white version as a PiP

Thank you very much Rosa. Yes it is as it makes you realise how hard life was for crofters at this time, and also just how far we have all progressed in what is really a relatively short period of time. I am pleased you liked the music too. Music was important to them and the skills would have been taught to the children too. I have never been to a Ceilidh but it really sounds like good fun!
