Zitronenfalter - Ich habe den Winter überstanden - I have survived the winter

I found this beautiful male common brimstone (Gonepteryx rhamni) today. It fluttered past the edge of a forest and sat down after a while to warm itself in the March sun. It folded up its wings and stood sideways to the sun as shown in the photo. Common brimstone butterflies overwinter completely unprotected, even in ice and snow. Protection from freezing is provided by their body's own antifreeze. The butterflies become active from February. After mating, eggs are laid in April and the butterflies die. The eggs hatch into caterpillars, which feed on buckthorn. After pupation, new common brimnstone butterflies emerge at the end of June, which live the whole year and through the following winter and do not die until April. This means that the common brimstone butterfly has the longest life expectancy among the native butterflies, as its life as a butterfly lasts around ten months.
