Der größte europäische Fink - Kernbeißer - Hawfinch - The largest European finch
Der Kernbeißer (Coccothraustes coccothraustes) macht seinem Namen alle Ehre: Sogar Kirschkerne kann dieser Fink mit seinem sehr großen, kräftigen Schnabel knacken, um an die begehrten Samen zu kommen. Er ist zwar in der Nähe gut zu erkennen, doch er ist auf größere Entfernung fast unsichtbar, weil er sich in der Regel beinahe heimlich in den Baumkronen aufhält, und durch seine unauffällige Farbe fast unsichtbar ist. Ich selbst habe Kernbeißer erst zweimal im Wald entdecken können. In strengen Wintern kommen sie auch ans Futterhäuschen, wo sie sich energisch Platz zum Fressen verschaffen.
Den Kernbeißer im Bild beobachtete ich in einem Eichen-Mischwald und fotografierte ihn mit meinem 350er Tele. Die ganze Zeit wurde ich misstrauisch beäugt

The Hawfinch (Coccothraustes coccothraustes) lives up to its name: this finch can even crack open cherry stones with its very large, powerful beak to get at the coveted seeds. It is easy to spot close up, but it is almost invisible at a greater distance because it usually stays almost stealthy in the treetops, and its inconspicuous colour makes it almost invisible. I myself have only been able to spot hawfinches twice in the forest. In harsh winters they also come to the feeders, where they energetically make room for themselves to feed.
I observed the hawfinch in the picture in a mixed oak forest and photographed it with my 350 telephoto. The whole time I was eyed suspiciously.
