Riding The Storm ...

Riding The Storm ...
I came across this large and somewhat unsightly block of flats in Harrogate last week and for some reason it immediate reminded me of the side of those massive big cruise ships.

Maybe it was just because of the small sailing ship that someone had placed in their window or maybe it was the harshness of the structure. Whatever the reason I decided to capture it with a Dutch angle and then added some texturing before taking the selective colouring option ... overall I think it works?

Please view on black for best effect.

For Sight and Sound ... what else but Rod Stewart with "Sailing":

It works really well, the Dutch angle and the red ship! The building for me evokes a feeling of Eastern Bloc:-) In Germany we jokingly call the big cruiseliners "schwimmender Plattenbau", Plattenbau being the highrises built from prefabricated concrete panels that were built in East Germany and other socialist countries.

Thanks for that terrific insight into German life Gudrun ... I love the fact that I am not the only one to draw comparisons between the two structures. Thanks also for the star! :)

Very good. Sweet and touching. It's like a little dream of faraway places sitting up there, waiting to light the life of someone of sufficient imagination.

Probably wouldn't have thought of it Lutz had it not been for that little sailing boat in the window. Still, I'm glad you like both the shot and the comparison ... thanks for the star too! :)

"with a Dutch angle'? I am on a need to know basis. What is a Duitch angle?

It works really well here. Nice processing. I feel the photo stands on its own without the info about how/why you did it, but I enjoy knowing your process.

When one thinks of Harrogate one does not think of this sort of photo, Paul. Where are the beautiful Georgian buildings? The colour popping of the red sails and the angle of the eastern block architecture is very dramatic though.

autofantasia club has replied to Amelia club
Glad you like it Amelia and you're absolutely right it isn't necessarily they type of building you associate Harrogate with although there are a few like it and some like this one not that far away from the Stray!

To be fair, in reality it didn't look quite so bleak (as the original image that I've now inserted into the Notes shows), but it still wasn't what I'd call pretty! ;)

Nice work Paul. Great architectural abstract. The mono processing works well, its brought out the texture in the concrete walls.

Thanks so much for those lovely comments Keith with which you've seriously made my day. I don't think I do anything that special so I'm chuffed to bits when people say nice things! :)

If you ever want any tips or know how I've done anything you see in my photostream just ask and I'll try to explain as best I can.

Thanks Paul. One of my intentions when I retire at the end of this year, is to learn how to use photoshop properly..!! I'm hoping I'll be able to find a course locally. At present I find it difficult to make time. Take care mate.
