Dry Stone Rider ...

Dry Stone Rider ...
Called "Le Monument" this artistic dry stone wall sculpture was created by Gordon Simpson, Master Dry Stone Waller. It was erected in 2014 and unveiled by Brian Robinson to commemorate the Tour de France, which passed the spot between Ripley and Harrogate where this piece of public art can now be admired.

The shot was taken by me a few days ago for this week's Sunday Challenge, for which the theme was sport or anything to do with sport.

You'll find a shot of the overall sculpture in the Notes and you can learn more about the man responsible for creating "Le Monument" by visiting the site below:

www.dry-stone-waller.co.uk

Or, check out this short little video on YouTube:

Oh, and if you're wondering, as I was, who Brian Robinson is. Well it turns out that he was the first ever Briton to finish the Tour de France and the first to win a stage in the race way back in in the 1950s.

Doug Shepherd, , .t.a.o.n., and 15 other people have particularly liked this photo

Great monument to commemorate the Tour de Fance passing through the area ... Bravo to Gordon Simpson & Brian Robinson. Paul you have done a great job with presenting Le Monument such great texture. The pov of your main shot makes it feel as if I am standing right there as the cyclists fly by. :) Always appreciate the background information you share. :)

That's an original contribution! The wheels look like millstones. Good to see that there are still people carrying on the tradition of dry stone walling.

autofantasia club has replied to Gudrun club
They may well indeed be millstones Gudrun or they may have been crafted specifically for this installation. Either way, I'm glad you like both the art and the shot ... thanks also for the fave! :)

First thing that came to mind as soon as our leaders confirmed it could indeed be anything to do with sport ... even though I had to drive 30 miles to get the shot! ;)
