To Be Remembered ...
For this week's Sunday Challenge, which had the theme of faces.
This marble carving formed part of a memorial I came across whilst walking around the ruins of St Andrews Cathedral in Scotland last week.
It marked the spot where the mortal remains of Adam Ferguson, Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, were laid to rest.
He was born way back on the 20th of June, 1723 and died in St Andrews on the 22nd of February, 1816 ... amazing to think then that this monument is now over 200 years old!
There's a shot of the inscription in the Notes although I'm afraid the text is slightly eroded and difficult to read in parts.
And if this has made you want to know more about the man you could start by checking him out on Wikipedia, though I'm not too sure what he himself would make of that suggestion:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Ferguson
Please view large on black for best effect.

This was also a great entry to commemorate Father's Day, as the inscription was written by his children. Good work, Paul! :-)
PaulOClassic© has replied to Valfalautofantasia club has replied to ValfalThe latter part of the inscription is equally insightful as it goes on to: "record his piety to God and benevolence to man, and commemorate the eloquence and energy with which he inculated the precepts of morality, and prepared the youthful mind for virtuous actions".
Love to know what his descendants are up to these days! ;)
