To Be Remembered ...

To Be Remembered ...
For this week's Sunday Challenge, which had the theme of faces.

This marble carving formed part of a memorial I came across whilst walking around the ruins of St Andrews Cathedral in Scotland last week.

It marked the spot where the mortal remains of Adam Ferguson, Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, were laid to rest.

He was born way back on the 20th of June, 1723 and died in St Andrews on the 22nd of February, 1816 ... amazing to think then that this monument is now over 200 years old!

There's a shot of the inscription in the Notes although I'm afraid the text is slightly eroded and difficult to read in parts.

And if this has made you want to know more about the man you could start by checking him out on Wikipedia, though I'm not too sure what he himself would make of that suggestion:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Ferguson

Please view large on black for best effect.

, Don Sutherland, Pam J, Karen's Place and 4 other people have particularly liked this photo

A great find, and very well photographed, especially of the inscription in the note. I got a kick out of this sentence: "Unseduced by the temptations of pleasure, power, or ambition, he employed the interval betwixt his childhood and grave with unostentatious and steady perserverance in acquiring and diffusing knowledge, and in the practice of public and domestic virtue." Apparently people had a much better command of the language in those days ;-)

This was also a great entry to commemorate Father's Day, as the inscription was written by his children. Good work, Paul! :-)

Too true! These guys really make our modern day obituaries look as if they are the work of amateurs!

Thanks for the lovely comments Val and for taking time to check out the inscription, not to mention the fave! :)

The latter part of the inscription is equally insightful as it goes on to: "record his piety to God and benevolence to man, and commemorate the eloquence and energy with which he inculated the precepts of morality, and prepared the youthful mind for virtuous actions".

Love to know what his descendants are up to these days! ;)

Lovely capture of the passage of time on the memorial.

Indeed it is Esther ... the spell checker online wouldn't even recognise "inculated" ... a different world, but not necessarily a better one. I guess a lot depended on where you were born and how much money you had. Come to think of it, perhaps it was that different to this world after all - lol! ;)

St. Andrews is really a lovely place, know you enjoyed it there Paul. This image looks good on black Paul and that is quite an inscription ... as Val said, folks had a better command of the language back then. :)

Sadly for us Chris, the weather on the day we went though to St Andrews was pretty poor ... dreich in fact to use a good Scottish word! :)

Still, at least it gave me a new shot to post for the challenge - lol! :)

Thanks for that Keith. Glad you like the shot and you're right about him being rather stern looking ... I guess all that piety not to mention remaining unseduced by the temptations of pleasure, power, or ambition took its toll - lol! :)
